It kind of depends on what you mean? It's a really, really fucking good and well made show in many ways. It's also chintzy and cheap and campy and sometimes dumb. There's no contradiction there.

Was there a lot of inconsistancy with the writing? Yeah, especially in later seasons.

But I loved it and despite it being cheesy, I don't think it was a BAD show.

Huh. Every time I do a rewatch I'm pretty blown away by how good it was. Sure it had some shit episodes and I personally can't stand the last couple seasons but overall I think it's a great show. Even the seasons I don't like had some great moments and episodes. What a funny old world...

I wish you had qualified what you mean by "awful."

To me, it's the same as any supernatural soap opera. It's cheesy, easily dated, melodramatic, low budget, and the writing is dodgy. But I still wouldn't call it downright awful.

I think - certainly for at least a few seasons of the show - it does a genuinely great job at telling an emotionally engaging story using supernatural elements, and having that story be satisfying and resonant and engaging and good.

Eh, okay.

I've been a diehard fan since S2 aired, and yeah, there are shitty episodes, and characters I want to throttle, but it's also got an emotional wallop. with certain episodes and arcs that bring me to tears every time. Generally I don't call things that do that "Utter crap."

Why did you mention Smallville? I don't understand the comment. It sounds like you are saying Buffy (a much older show) is way better than Smallville which seems like a positive.

I completely missed the boat with this. My partner holds it in very high esteem and insists I need to watch it, but I'm not sure if it would hold up on a first-time watch now?

I never watched it either. I keep hearing about how good it is (except from the OP of the secret) and wondering what I'm missing.

It's pretty dated in its humor, sure, but it was my first fandom and still holds up even years later. There are some scenes that still just floor me with how powerful they are. I'd skip season 1 altogether. It's all cheese with no substance or much of an overarching plot. Season 2 is where it starts getting really good.

I sort of "first time" watched it two years ago. Mind you I did watch a bit as a teenager but I did not remember anything about it except the musical episode.

I ended up loving the show to pieces! Maybe I still had some subconscious nostalgia going, but I think it's worth a try.

I get a kick out of how so many dedicated fans aren't willing to admit how bad the show sucks. I love BTVS, it's my favorite show! But damn, it's awful lol. And it was awful while it was still airing too. It's almost impressive that a later show like 'Smallville' could be worse.
