I completely missed the boat with this. My partner holds it in very high esteem and insists I need to watch it, but I'm not sure if it would hold up on a first-time watch now?

I never watched it either. I keep hearing about how good it is (except from the OP of the secret) and wondering what I'm missing.

It's pretty dated in its humor, sure, but it was my first fandom and still holds up even years later. There are some scenes that still just floor me with how powerful they are. I'd skip season 1 altogether. It's all cheese with no substance or much of an overarching plot. Season 2 is where it starts getting really good.

but the final episode of the first season is such a punch...

For someone who's never seen BtVS, I actually recommend the first season more than the other seasons. It's shorter, so it drags less. And it has the "invisible girl" episode.

I sort of "first time" watched it two years ago. Mind you I did watch a bit as a teenager but I did not remember anything about it except the musical episode.

I ended up loving the show to pieces! Maybe I still had some subconscious nostalgia going, but I think it's worth a try.
