Really? I thought it was about going out and catching pokemon while getting some exercise.

I don't need other people in my life to walk around and get some fresh air and catch some pokemon.

i thought the existence of the teams made it pretty clear from the beginning that the social aspect was going to be a big part of the game. plus the fact that it was made by niantic, the same company that created ingress.

I honestly thought of the 'choose a team' thing like, 'choose a Hogwart's house' to be honest. It was more about personality type than actually having anything to do with the game?

(I also don't know what Ingress is, or who Niantic was before PoGo. >__>)

games generally don't ask you to choose teams/groups unless it's going to have some sort of effect on the gameplay, though, like picking horde vs. alliance in warcraft.

ingress was their previous game and it was very socially driven... basically sort of like a giant capture the flag game. they used it as the basis for pokemon go - most gyms and pokestops were also portals in ingress. pokemon go is actually less social than ingress so far, although they've been adding more and more group-oriented stuff lately.

OP

To me the teams just made it more competitive, not more social. It allowed me to take over other team's gyms, which I could do all by myself. And, yes, there was/is some collaboration when I add my pokemon to a gym that has already been turned my color or when other people add their pokemon to the gym that I took over, but that team/gym aspect doesn't force me to be social. And tbh, for the raids, teams don't really matter that much. People grouped together for teams on community raid days, but most of the time I just see random people asking for others to join them on raids, and no one mentions their team. So I don't think having a team is as big an indicator as you think it is.

nayrt but Niantic definitely has intended for players to interact with the community from the start. Not that it isn't possible to play solo (I do) but it's definitely emphasized meeting and working with other players.
