126: Looking at your examples: Maybe if you tried, well, good writers? I'd love to give you as many recs as you could handle.

138: Usually, it has to do with how most of it seems to come from a double standard in how characters are approached based on gender than treatment of specific female characters.

Re: 138

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. If it weren't usually so clear that part of their problem is the gender of the character involved, and that it wouldn't be a problem if they were reversed(and I've seen people apply the double standard within a few sentences plenty of times) I wouldn't really care.

Why does everyone think Anne Rice is a bad writer? I've heard people saying she was a good writer on a previous F!S posts, so why the naysayers now? I ask because it's driving me nuts.

Re: 126

I think the "bad writer" is mostly towards her more recent books, rather than her work as a whole. My comment was mostly towards the other 2.

Didn't she get rid of her editor at one point? That might have something to do with it.

That would explain why Blood Canticle SUCKED SO MUCH RAWR.

Yep, Anne has apparently gotten too big for her britches to be edited: http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA458094.html (http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA458094.html)

While I enjoyed some of her earlier books (I enjoy a spot of purple prose when in the right mood), I gave up on her stuff in the late 80s because it was already starting to feel far too much like the books desperately needed a serious once over with a red pencil, possibly attached to a chainsaw; I shudder to think how much worse they might have become in the last twenty years.

Re: 126

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay then... Cause Blood Canticle? No, just no.

Re: 126

[identity profile] haruhiism.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she's certainly not a great one.

I personally don't have any interest in her books. That could be because I think she's batshit insane. I also hold little respect for her after the reply she left to negative feedback of one of her books on amazon.

...Actually, I'm beginning to hate SMeyer for the same reasons. Fancy that.

Re: 126

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
She's just mad because people didn't like what she did to her characters (ie. rape them).

I hate SMeyer for getting her crappy Mary Sue fantasy published... cause I know of many people who wrote better than that when they were teenagers.

Re: 126

[identity profile] haruhiism.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
HMMM, I wonder why they didn't like it. :|

Rofl yes, and Breaking Dawn just... wow. WOW.

It's like a bunch of fanfic cliches thrown into one book and some pedophilia to top it all off (though, people would argue that that particular theme has been there since the beginning).

It is very sad. There are so many who are more deserving to be published. Honestly, I have to wodner how this stuff gets published. I knwo the Paolini story, so what's hers? (Admittedly, Twilight wasn't HORRID, but as the series went on just... yeah.)

126: The OP seems to be saying that s/he will like a book perfectly fine until s/he discovers it was written by a woman. But maybe I'm reading it wrong.

138: I read the OP as saying that s/he dislikes the large majority of female characters ("on the whole"). While the sexism amongst the creators, producers and distributors of various forms of media could well cause one to dislike female characters at a greater rate than male characters, after a certain point you have to wonder if maybe it's sexism on the part of the reader/viewer.

Re: 126, 138

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-08-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
126: I'm trying to be optimistic.

138: Kind of my point. Most criticism of female characters that I've encountered (where the dislike is actually explained, not the generic "she sucks") has made it clear that part of the problem is that they are female, and the same standards aren't applied to male characters, who are given much more leeway. When most people complain about the treatment of female characters (what the OP is complaining about) it isn't "how dare you not like the female character I like!" but a reaction to the double standard.
