Whoa, why would people even bother attacking you wtf. That's just wrong, haha.

But, uh. Personally, I don't really like what they did to Axel in KH2? I mean, you see him in CoM going around backstabbing people and killing others with no signs of remorse, and then KH2 he's suddenly WOE ROXAS (it's the only way I can describe it). And that best friends thing is pretty much what the pairing's based on? There are prolly more reasons, but that seems to be the main thing.

... And I just. Can't. Find myself believing that Axel, the bastard, the backstabber, the liar, is the same as the one that's bff with Roxas. There's just NO development at all (how they even became friends, let alone best friends, etc.), and it doesn't make any sense to me. Which is also why I'm not fond of the pairing myself.

I don't know. When I dislike something I tend to avoid it, but that logic doesn't seem to apply to fandom a lot of the time.

I've always seen his behaviour as being the other way around - that he's a backstabber/liar/bastard in CoM because he's best friends with Roxas. Marluxia etc are working to undermine Xemnas, and use Sora to do it. At the time, Roxas is safe in the Org, has no idea about Sora. If Marluxia's plan worked, that could all come into danger. How long before they decided to get Roxas under their control as well? And a variety of other potential consequences. Idk, the new game might do away with this theory entirely, but it's the one I'm gonna stand by for now.

It'd have been nice if they actually cleared that up, like given a canon reason for Axel to have done the things he did -- basically KH2 forces us to accept that AXEL AND ROXAS WERE BFF, NAMINE SAYS SO, SO THEY ARE, THE END, and doesn't really show us how or why that happened

Roxas makes Axel feel like he has a heart -- why?

Why? -- and you can't answer me, because there's no canon reason given for that, ever. It's just kind of shoved in your face and never explained (or even shown, really, except for a short scene AFTER they're friends -- which doesn't explain HOW they became friends in the first place). Fandom can come up with their own versions of the story, sure, but the thing is there is no official story and it bugs people who, before KH2, couldn't see Axel acting like that at all.

One minute he's backstabbing bastard and the next he's woeful clingly friend -- it's not "character development" if nothing's shown developing, you know? Just -- bam, one way and then the other -- what the hell happened?

Yeah but in that mindset it's one after the other, where, while the events are chronologically CoM then KH2, we're told that Axel had this friendship with Roxas during/before CoM. It's not 'he's a bastard and then he's a good guy'. He's both at the same time.

As for the make him feel like he has a heart thing, it's pretty strongly implied that that's more to do with Roxas being Sora's Nobody than anything going on with Axel specifically, except maybe that Roxas spent more time with him.

And we're getting a game that'll explain it. But will it actually do it adequately? Nomura adds plot holes like he adds zips. Will he really wrap up the things we care about - like how Axel and Roxas ended up friends in the first place - or will he just give us more unanswered questions? And oh look, we have to buy yet another console to be able to find out. Fuck, I love being a Squeenix fan.

Sounds like really bad retconning to me. Kinda like having Sephiroth be a clingy woefriend in Final Fantasy 7-2 and then being all "yeah, this new character you're playing? Was his best friend all along, we just never mentioned it" ethgkejt (but Tifa says it's true so you have to believe her)

I'm sure there would be people slashing Seph/character all over, but also people going "what the hell just happened" and disliking the pairing.

There's also the aspect of the order that people might come to the games. I didn't have a GBA, so I didn't get CoM - my first introduction to Axel's character was KH2. It's easy for me to see CoM as an extension of that character, rather than the other way around. That said, I know there are people who did play them in the right order and have the same opinion as me, and I do think that saying just because a character is a bastard in one place/series of events he can't be a nicer guy elsewhere is a bit constrictive. I also have difficulty seeing Axel in KH2 as a nice guy - I don't think he was, I think it was just a different brand of the same stuff from CoM. Less vicious and manipulative/in control, maybe, but then Roxas had really thrown a spanner in the works by strolling off the way he did.

But yeah, even the new game is going to be a massive retcon. But retcons get a bad wrap these days - they're not all bad. I don't really have much hope for the new game being a decent wrap up that answers all our questions without resorting to 'light! darkness! hearts! lol!' though.

And yeah, I've got no problem with other people having different views. It's when it starts turning into flamewars and attacks, and most of those have seemed to be motivated by the fact that Axel/Roxas is such a big pairing (actually stated by the flamers themselves, several times.)

That wasn't the case here though, obviously - and I was genuinely curious and so I asked, and then I thought it was an interesting discussion. That's all.
