Why color me feeling silly and full of prejudice... honestly, I am pretty darn surprised. I suppose cynically and hastily making conclusions based on the common stereotypes of what appeals to different genders is becoming less and less valid.... man is my face red now.

You shouldn't be embarrassed, don't worry about it. Gainax themselves posted into their GL blog how surprised they were at the number of females in the GL-themed events. This was something nobody saw coming. :)

Which does bring about the question... will they eventually sell that Simon-pillow the fans made in response to the Nia and Yoko-pillow? Because I think that would be pretty damn epic.

And so, the world just became a little more epic. Although I would have picked a more awesome picture of Simon: if you're going to bed hugging Simon, I'd think the choice would be hugging the Bold, Daring and Confident Simon that looks towards the sky and pierces the heaven and will Hold you in his boy-manly arms etc etc. But hey, maybe that's just me misinterpreting the fans again, maybe they prefer shota-Simon.

It's kinda scary how much some female fans love shota!Simon actually. Whenever I go into the Simon thread on 2ch, everyone there is always cooing over little "Simon-kyun." Though I get the impression that most of those people are Kamina/Simon fans.

I would say I was surprised if in fact I was surprised that fans of yaoi enjoy a relationship between two characters where the taller man is bold, supportive and affirming to the younger, frailer boy who looks up to the man as a rolefigure. As it is, it's practically to be expected.
