Kind of OT story
We ended up stuck in a traffic jam for FIVE AND A HALF HOURS. We reached Hampton Court in the concert's interval... and discovered that Warlow had had to call off at the last minute because he had throat trouble.
Our pain was mitigated only by meeting some people who'd flown all the way there from the US just to get to see him (although they did at least get to see half an hour of him in rehearsal).
Anyway, I too wish I could have seen Warlow as the Phantom!
(ETA: he does have some solo albums where you can hear him singing Music of the Night, but I don't know how easy they are to get now. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there's some on YouTube.)
Re: Kind of OT story
Puts me in mind of getting tickets to the LotR Musical's finale night for the sole purpose of seeing Michael Therriault's final performance as Gollum only to run into his understudy that morning and find out he'd left two days ago.
Only your story's like, fifteen times worse, because at least I got to see him perform before, and meet him.
It's not just hearing Warlow sing, though; I just wanted to see the level of madness he'd bring to the character.
Actually, Therriault's amazing character-pops really reminded me of Warlow (but I doubt the latter was as physical).
I've been given to understand that if I ever want to get anywhere, the quickest route is the one that doesn't involve the M25. Or the circle line.

Aaargh, that sucks!
I can't feel too sorry for myself over missing Warlow in concert because I did have about 5 years in my life where I spent every available penny on my Phantom fandom, during which I had so many great and lucky fandom experiences I really don't have anything to complain about!
If there's one Phantom I never saw who I most wish I could have seen though, it would be Warlow rather than Crawford. Like you say, I wish I could see how he'd play the role, quite apart from his amazing voice.
