I don't know who the other fans you know are but I don't like the changes one bit. Yet another show I love that went downhill from a cast change.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It is literally the same except for different hosts.

Ok, I have to spell this out. I don't like the new hosts.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. But the show is not worse. You just don't like the new people.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a little disingenuous to act as though a near total cast change to people you like less than the previous cast isn't making the show worse in one person's opinion. You don't get to decide for other people whether or not they think a show has gone downhill and it's really weird you're trying.

thank you.

+1
Idk what anon would consider “worse” if apparently a subjective opinion doesn’t count.
greghousesgf: (Ewww!)

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2018-09-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
my opinion is not invalid just because you don't agree with me.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
How so?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The format is the same, yes. But Prue's comments are significantly more critical and less supportive than Mary's. Mel and Sue were more into silly innuendo (a fan favorite) than Noel and Sandi. They also offered a lot more support and feedback to the bakers about their food than Noel and Sandi do.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
More critical is fine by me. She isn't mean about it. The silly innuendo is definitely still there. no idea why you think otherwise. They also seemed to be doing the thing where they support people by telling them it ins't that bad. Not sure what you were watching.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about that. Can't remember what episode it was, but for one of the technical rounds she exclaimed about how awful all the bakes looked. That wasn't particularly nice or helpful.

Wordplay isn't the same thing as innuendo.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
P. S. I didn't say there wasn't any innuendo now. There's less of it. It's a question of degree, as a result of Mel and Sue's comedy style vs. Noel Sandi's.

Series 9,episode 4. Poor Ruby's showstopper chocolate sphere collapsed at the bottom and when she presents it to the judges, Prue looks at her and says, "Do you understand the words 'sphere'?"

That's mean and not at all necessary. Several bakers had troubles with their chocolate sphere, mind you. But only one baker got that reaction. Prue isn't nasty all the time, but she comes out with remarks like this that aren't constructive criticism, they're just unkind. Mary wouldn't have done that, ever.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-28 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, except that Prue IS kind of mean about it.

Those quotes are directly from the show. Not sure which show you were watching to miss that.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I do wonder how much of that was just settling into a new dynamic. Especially with the change from Mary to Prue - Prue is more critical than Mary was, but I feel like Paul has also become less critical, and I think a lot of it is just finding the balance betwen those different roles. I do think it would be good if Noel and Sandi were more aggressively supportive. That was such an important aspect of the show. But there again I expect it takes time.

(NB that I'm in America and haven't seen any of the currently airing season so I don't have the benefit of looking at the dynamic there)

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You're absolutely right about the differences. The new bake off isn't a bad show, but it's definitely not exactly the same. I don't know how anyone who's seen both the old version and the new one could claim there's no difference except for the faces.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I feel as though Paul's being (or being edited to seem) less critical because Prue is more critical than Mary ever was and the show is trying to find a better balance. I miss Mary. :(

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Imo the only real problem w the cast changes is that they necessarily give Paul Hollywood a bigger voice and role in the show, which is bad because he kinda sucks.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-27 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 Mary was amazing. Paul was so not amazing.

This is why I stopped watching. that and I love Mary.

Mary was great. she was like everybody's favorite granma.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
She's irreplaceable. The show isn't the same without her. :(

(Anonymous) 2018-09-28 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, of all the regulars I would have got rid of, Paul would have been #1 and yet he's still here and there's even more of him and his stupid handshakes. I like Sandi and Noel (they're not the same as Mel and Sue but they're good in their own way), I'm not fond of Prue particularly, but Paul is such an egotistical douche.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Paul's presence was the least critical factor to the show's success. I was gutted when it was announced that he'd be staying with the show and everyone else was leaving.
