I guess so, but I'm really uncomfortable with the idea that to move forward, we all have to forget who we are and where we came from, and more importantly stop celebrating those things.

I don't disagree. I would tend to fall more on the side of the needs of the present, but yeah, both sides have value.

but the conflict does still exist.

If "forgetting who we are and where we came from" means tearing down monuments built to people who would still felt they should own slaves even at their deaths, and if it means that people aren't racist, sexist, ableist, etc., then I'm fine with it.

I'm sorry, but there's certain things we shouldn't celebrate. Like genocides. Or attempted ones.

So I guess we should probably tear down the pyramids and other Egyptian monuments. You know. Because of all the slavery.

Those aren't really political monuments to anything that we would recognize today or that has any contemporary political relevance.

On the other hand, a monument to a Confederate general is a monument to an idea and a cause that's still deeply relevant to our contemporary politics.
