In the previous Kingsman they alluded to Merlin's taste in music. It was something he and Harry shared, if only as a joke or something of Merlin's own interest. Merlin's taste in music is one of the few things they were able to keep centric due to the way they took the second movie. While they never gave reason to his love for the song, it was one of the few things that existed before they heavily Americanised the film... Of course this is all by my memory;; I might be wrong, but I was always moved by that scene because I thought it to be part of his character. It was what he asked Harry in order to confirm his identity I thought- or mentioned in some way. (honestly, I suck at searching for things so I can't actually say for sure;;)
I get why you'd question it, It's odd, but that's why I always thought he brought it up in the first place...
(I've even been defensive of that new Fallout game when it comes to this song, believe it or not;;)
Either way I'm not sure how him singing cheapens his apparent death. He was trying to draw as many people towards the blast as possible- simply screaming would just be unfortunate- and singing does fit the theme of the film- what he sings, if anything, is just suited to the lackies he's trying to draw in.

[If I'm wrong, I am sorry, and let me know because I really do suck at this;;]
