I wish she had learned from the Dumbledore thing and left it at that, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to learn from things that you don't consider mistakes. Has Rowling ever acknowledged that maybe wasn't the greatest way to shoehorn in more diversity into her canon?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever acknowledged that she wasn't exactly trying to do that?

What is there to learn?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That there's a difference between writing something on the page, and saying it afterwards

What is she retconning?

Nagini being a snake who is not also a South Korean woman

When JKR wrote it she was kinda just focusing on Britain, and from that POV it's reasonably diverse and representative of our national makeup in the nineties.

The criticism she gets now seems to be entirely based on a UScentric standpoint. Which, frankly, is totally irrelevant.

And this is all why I stopped paying attention to HP stuff and actively avoid most things to do with it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This whole post seems like a bit of an old misrepresentation of what's going on

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on. Even in the 90s, the UK wasn't that white, and I'm pretty sure it was a lot gayer than what Dumbledore represented at Hogwarts. Also some of the criticism Rowling's gotten recently was for her handling of North American magic, in which case a UScentric standpoint is very much relevant.

Mostly seems to be Asian people complaining about Nagini (I don't know where all of them live, though).

Personally, I kind of like how Nagini's actress looks, though maybe it would have been better to have an Indonesian, if that's where Nagas are supposed to be from.

That's not what retcon means...

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What I love is how people believe she releases those little tidbits for any other reason then to generate hype for her brand. She isn't trying to appear 'woke' or any other buzz word. Her audience has aged out of the demographic for the most part but if she wants to keep people talking about a series where the last book was released ll years ago she has to do something.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that the criticism isn't valid. It's that it's obnoxious and pathetic. And super, super frustrating for us, too, believe me.

See, whereas I think she just wants the credit for being woke while purposely refusing to acknowledge the legit criticism. I'd maybe feel sorry for her if I thought she really did care but I don't think she does.

I honestly thought it was a joke to begin with, like someone was shit-posting a completely stupid idea that makes no sense.

Except that it's apparently true and just makes her role in the HP books confusing.

I'm just sticking with her being a baby Basilisk or just a big magical snake, that suits me better.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wouldn't have been so annoyed if this character had been a Naga and turned into a giant snake and Nagini wasn't involved at all, but clunky prequel tie-ins like this always shit me. And I'm a comics fan, so I know for clunky prequel tie-ins.

I like the idea of her being a little snake that Tom bonded with in the orphanage and then used magic to extend her life and make her bigger.

For reals.

No one can convince that this idea isn’t just bullshit that JKR made up recently. Nothing in the text or subtext ever states or implies Nagini was something besides a giant snake.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think she's also maybe more 1998 progressive than 2018 progressive, which also hurts her. (I say that as someone who grew up in 1998.) I don't think she's trying to be woke, I just don't think she realizes how controversial the move is. (I 100% believe, FWIW, that the Naga/Nagini link is real. JKR already admitted to cutting out a lot of things, so why not Nagini's backstory?)

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think Rowling kinda suffers from the same issue that Joss Whedon does... he believes he's earned his feminist street cred with BtVS, but doesn't seem to realize that while BtVS was cutting edge back in the day, it's 2018 and that aspect of the show isn't really passing the test of time. Similarly, I think in her head, Rowling is very "woke" compared to how a lot of readers (especially younger ones) might see her. And to be fair, she's very progressive for a woman of her age and socio-economic status, and compared to many of her peers she's very vocal about it.

Now, I totally believe the Naga/Nagini link. But I don't think Rowling included it to be diverse, I think she was just borrowing a neat sounding tidbit from another culture, much like she's borrowed a lot of the elements of her universe.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Although I think people are ridiculously over dramatic about pretty harmless stuff... another part of me just wishes she'd quietly fade out and stop with the tweets trying to make everything seem more diverse than she actually wrote it.

Of course I'll never forgive her because I'm eternally salty about "Albus Severus" and her pretending Snape was anything other than a pathetic racist incel who bullies kids because one girl rejected him in the past. Instead of honoring the only child of the "love of his life" he sets out to make his school life as miserable as possible, despite Hogwarts being the only good thing in Harry's life. Or how he stole and ripped a note written for Sirius to pretend like Lily wrote something for him. VOMIT.

Whoa... I guess not even time can heal my bitterness about Snape.
