It's the same reason the "modesty sock" is used in nude scenes that show the ass. When there are 20 people crowded around you, being completely nude and at the "mercy of the elements" wouldn't necessarily be fun.

At least with a fake covering your junk you feel a LITTLE less exposed.

Kristian Nairn, the actor who plays Hodor in Game of Thrones, had to wear a very large prosthetic (14 inches, apparently) because the character is supposed to be half giant. He didn't ask for it but he still got it.
