Would it help to try a small exchange? I find the larger exchanges a bit overwhelming when signing up so I go through the tags and on a separate piece of paper write out what I'm interested in, then narrow it down to my requests/offers, then I do the sign ups. There are also prompt lists and some challenges on DW that I find fun. Tumblr occasionally dedicates a week to a pairing or character with prompts and sometimes an exchange. Not sure if any of that is within your wheelhouse, but options.
