Is it that you want to do the exchange, but you can't get past the signup hurdle?

Because if that's the case I'll bet that the mods of most exchanges, even the really big ones, would work with you to help get you signed up (or even enter your signup info for you.)

I don't get it? Sorry, how does signing up for something give someone anxiety?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't really understand, either. What about the process specifically triggers OP's anxiety?

Related: I've been kinda worried about AO3 becoming a single point of failure for fanfic, in that if it goes down that's it. There's no coming back from the loss of *that much* fanfic.

I worry about that, too. That's one reason I like to post everything in 3 places.

Of course, that doesn't solve the problem of losing everyone else's :(

I just download literally every fic I read. From my browsing history, you'd think I don't spend much time there, but that's because I open a potential fic, hit download, and peace out. It's saved me multiple times when authors decide to nuke their shit and take down a favorite fic of mine, and lets me read offline. I do the same for my own fics for easy .epub backups.

Would it help to try a small exchange? I find the larger exchanges a bit overwhelming when signing up so I go through the tags and on a separate piece of paper write out what I'm interested in, then narrow it down to my requests/offers, then I do the sign ups. There are also prompt lists and some challenges on DW that I find fun. Tumblr occasionally dedicates a week to a pairing or character with prompts and sometimes an exchange. Not sure if any of that is within your wheelhouse, but options.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but if your anxiety is that severe maybe not participating in an exchange is best. IME they can be stressful because you're worried about expectations and deadlines. I've modded exchanges before and I've had the experience where people sign up for them with the best of intentions but it's sort of like buying a cute outfit in a smaller size in hopes it'll inspire one's dieting. I don't think it's a good idea and frankly, it's very frustrating when people sign up and then have to withdraw later because it makes more work for me. I don't reprimand people for it, but I'm not real happy about the exchange being used that way when they know there's a good chance they won't be able to fulfill their obligations.

What I would suggest is maybe addressing the reason why the sign ups make you feel anxious and how to manage it more effectively. If the mods seem amenable, you could ask them for suggestions and ideas.

Wouldn't you be anxious no matter what exchange you sign up for? Like, why would it just specifically be on AO3?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-13 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but I can say that there are certain... ways to sign up that can trigger my anxiety while others don't. Like, I can app for RPs on journal sites without a problem, though I'll have bigger issues if I have to lay down a hold. But on a forum? It makes my heart SEIZE. Same with the idea of tumblr. Anything that involves sending a personal message to someone in order to get involved. Hard nope from me.

Now, I have no idea what signing up for an exchange on AO3 looks like, but if it's a different format than what the person is used to, I totally get it.

Thanks for your comment and examples! NAYRT, but I was similarly confused and this helped clear things up for me a lot.
