Who/what is this?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Bill Hader, he's set to play adult Richie Tozier in IT: Chapter Two

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Thank you. :)

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to look up the character because I had to idea who it was. I have no interest in this movie but I love Bill Hader so I will be smugly cool with this casting.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are people upset about it? I have no opinions on the casting myself.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen people complaining he's not good-looking enough to play Richie (even though book!Richie is not even supposed to be pretty anyway).

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird. I didn't think Richie was supposed to be particularly good looking.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not, from what I've seen I think people who are upset about this casting are those who think Finn Wolfhard is too hot for his adult version to be played by someone as 'plain' as Bill Hader. Richie is funny and sorta charming in his own way, but he's never been described as hot.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, super disturbing that people are describing a minor as "hot". He's not as homely as Richie is described in the novel, but then most TV/movie casting doesn't accurately reflect characters' looks when they're not conventionally attractive or arguably ugly.

90% of the new fandom is about him and Eddie as their "gay babies" so of course they're not ecstatic that he's a more normal looking guy than they imagined.

(I ship Reddie even, and wanting hot isn't automatically bad, but jfc the tumblr fandom is mostly wanky migratory Stranger Things fans who are now going to take over The Goldfinch too because of Finn Wolfhard and it's hard to do anything now without running into delusional REDDIE IS CANON folks so meh, fuck em.)

And anyway, I find Bill Hader nice-looking.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, you're seriously over exagerrating. I only saw about one or two people on tumblr genuinely expressing disappointment over Bill Hader's casting because he's "not hot" enough (the rest of the other handful of complaints had more to do with the doubt that he can act in a serious role or just him simply not matching up with what they had in mind). Conversely, I saw about 50 million other posts complaining about people complaining that Bill Hader is not hot enough to play Richie. It was fabricated outrage, basically. The vast majority of Reddie shippers on tumblr are all totally for Hader and frequently make posts thirsting over or supporting him. It's the Wattpad and Instagram fandom (which skews way younger) that's full of obsessed Finn fangirls who ship him with his costars and think Richie should be played by Ezra Miller.

I didn't mean to imply everyone was talking like that, just addressing the discussion of the very existent disappointment as brought up by someone else. I've seen what I've seen, you've seen what you've seen.

Ezra Miller. Jesus Christ.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Where did you see this? Any specific blogs? Because all the popular reddie blogs I follow are pro-Hader and don't mention anything about him being too ugly.

I don't remember where, which I'm sure is the wrong answer. I am happy if my impressions, which I tend to get more from my piecemeal dashboard than going into the general tags, are wrong.

I don't mean that 90% of the fandom is anti-Hader, just that when there's a strong shipper base for a book fandom...some people are going to care more about Richie being hot than funny, and I have seen that at varying degrees of obvious.

The only questionable casting for the adults imo is Jessica Chastain as Beverly (should've been Amy Adams, her likeness to the kid who played Beverly is uncanny) and James McAvoy as Bill (he's just way too short, Bill is supposed to be tall and exude strength and leadership). The rest of them are spot on, especially the guy they got for Eddie.

Hmm, I agree with all of this, Chastain is fine but I would have been thrilled about Amy Adams. I'm still getting used to the idea of McAvoy, it's just kinda weird.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
IA but it was already done for Sharp Objects so I get not wanting to repeat that casting...

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
This. I think Chastain is also on a friendlier basis with the director since they've worked with each other before.

I'm sure she'll do a great job as Beverly, but. Amy Adams is literally adult Sophia Lillis, it's such a shame :(

He's been one of my dream choices for Richie for years so I agree, and I have to wonder if a lot of the people who hate the idea haven't seen him in enough different things to appreciate his range (or....attractiveness?).

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
About 20/25 years ago, Greg Proops was my dream choice for grown up Richie.

Well, he looks reasonably like a grown up Finn Wolfhard, so that's good.

I'm one of the people who dislike him as Richie, not because he's not "hot" enough, but because for YEARS I've wanted Seth Green to play old Richie, just as he played young Richie in the mini. If not for that... I'd think Harder is too conventionally attractive to play "weird" guy Richie. But I'm also willing to give him a chance, see what he does with the script.

He looks like a cleaned up and polished Dwight from The Office
