(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)Also, some people have tried to "be nicer" and have civil conversations with Trump supporters. I've yet to see it change anything. All that winds up happening is that the Trump supporters continue to dig in their heels and further buy into his lies and bullshit, and the people who tried to be nice feel like they've been talking to a brick wall.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)Nobody wants to be told they're stupid and wrong, even when they're being stupid and wrong. Especially when they're being stupid and wrong.
I'm not saying there's an easy solution to this. A lot of patience, compassion, understanding and respect are needed, and right now, these are in short supply. And even if we can have a civil debate, not everyone is going to change their minds.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 06:02 am (UTC)(link)it's impossible to have a civil debate after 8 years of pure, deliberate, and admitted obstructionism
Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell - supposedly sane, mainstream non-trumpazoid republicans - explicitly said on national media that destroying obama was their #1 priority and more important to them than the welfare of the nation
there's no way to have a civil debate with that, that does anything except expose your side to bad faith attacks
there's no way to have civil debate with someone like trump, who is constitutively and constantly uncivil, and who appears to make literally no distinction between truth and falsehood
do I wish we could have civil debate? yeah. but we can't. and it was republicans who chose to make it impossible.
