It proves nothing, and isn't really a mystery. It's just human nature. By insulting someone for voting for a shit candidate, you are telling them they are stupid and wrong.

Nobody wants to be told they're stupid and wrong, even when they're being stupid and wrong. Especially when they're being stupid and wrong.

I'm not saying there's an easy solution to this. A lot of patience, compassion, understanding and respect are needed, and right now, these are in short supply. And even if we can have a civil debate, not everyone is going to change their minds.

And the other thing that's tricky is that, of course, people who hate Trump can still also have massive, extremely consequential political disagreements with each other. Just coming around on Trump being bad doesn't change that.

it's impossible to have a civil debate with every republican political official lying really loudly at all times

it's impossible to have a civil debate after 8 years of pure, deliberate, and admitted obstructionism

Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell - supposedly sane, mainstream non-trumpazoid republicans - explicitly said on national media that destroying obama was their #1 priority and more important to them than the welfare of the nation

there's no way to have a civil debate with that, that does anything except expose your side to bad faith attacks

there's no way to have civil debate with someone like trump, who is constitutively and constantly uncivil, and who appears to make literally no distinction between truth and falsehood

do I wish we could have civil debate? yeah. but we can't. and it was republicans who chose to make it impossible.
