He's relatable and still heroic. That's the core of it, and I think the variety of different telling of the story & contexts / audiences for the story makes it difficult to draw a more general argument. Certainly, in some versions, he does seem likr a beat or a dickhead to us now, but. Eh.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This, he is a teenager with nothing special about him that randomly got super powers. Every teen wants that to happen to them.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And not just that, but he still deals with teenage problems after getting them.

It almost seems weird to have to point this out.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter Parker wasn't a teenager all these years though? Only when Spiderman gets rebooted. He's usually an adult, I thought? Or a legal one, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The ur-Peter Parker is always a teenager, although the actually-existing versions of Peter Parker in various universes may not be (and often aren't).

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
No he's not. The UR-Peter Parker and his supporting cast is college aged. Some rando isn't gonna know who the fuck Liz Allen, Betty Brant, or Flash Thompson is but they all know MJ, Gwen, Eddie, Norman, and possibly Felicia.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
They know MJ and that's it, realistically

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
They definitely know Gwen and Eddie. The former because Gwen Stacey's death is up there with Uncle Ben and the Waynes. And Eddie because Venom is a break out in it's own right.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't agree

they might know Eddie right now because the movie just came out, but I would bet that 9 months ago, people might know who Venom was but they wouldn't know who Eddie was (if that makes sense). And if they know Gwen, it's only as "girl who died tragically". they don't have any background. Even with MJ, they probably would only really know her as "Spiderman's girlfriend".

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to be forgetting Venom was huge in the 90s. They might not know Eddie specifically but if you're u follow up with Venom people will go oh okay!! And yeah Gwen would be known as the girl who died, they might not know her as a character but they know who she is. Which is my point. Casual fans might not know who Barry Allen is for instance or any of his stories but if you say Barry Allen is the Flash they'll know who your talking about.

that won't happen with spider-man's high school cast.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But if you said that Mary Jane was Peter's high school girlfriend, they would also be like "Oh, yeah, that sounds right"

which she was in the Raimi movies btw

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
She wasn't. She didn't get with Peter till he was in college in the Raimi trilogy. In fact, Peter was in high school for all of five minutes in the Raimi movies. Peter's college cast has been supplanted to be in high school but it doesn't make it any less true that his college class and stories are the UR-spider-man era even if marvel keeps dipping him in high school paint.

The guy sold his marriage and eternal happniess to the Devil so his aunt could live a few more years making wheatcakes. She has nothing to complain about.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
except she was content to die to reunite with uncle Ben and Peter did it against her wishes and caused a massive mind wipe amongst the majority of his friends. So still a dick move.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
He's always come across as a brat to me. Was never a fan, but I can see why some people might be

MJ is where it's at anyway!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
You know it, tiger!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I was neutral about him until I ran across a stan who filled every discord channel with endless endless ENDLESS questions about every fucking sentence of every fucking Spidey fic they wrote.

I can't stand him now.

Really? A loser teenager gets superpowers and is a smart-ass, you don't get why he's liked?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's much of a mystery. He's relatable. Also, wish-fulfillment. A lot of people want to be considered special for whatever reason. And they'd like to be seen as funny. There are so many popular stories where an ordinary and/or unpopular teen has something extraordinary happen to them.

Agreed. I don't get it. Sure he's good along side MCU Toni but along with Superman and especially Batman I'm just...tired of this character being rebooted again and again. I'm glad he splashed into civil war fully formed. On his own though...he's just a bit of an irritant.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's because Joe Quesado keeps resetting him to be an asshat because married, mature, chemistry teacher is "unrelatable"

Also he sold his marriage to the literal devil so aunt may could live despite her wishes. So yeah. Dick move. Thanks Marvel

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Couldn't you say the same about literally every popular Marvel/DC comics character? Like... of the over 50 years some of these characters exist they are gonna have a lot of up's and downs. Every single one of them has these "unlikable asshole" moments or arcs.

Comic's fandom is an absolute nightmare. One character gets written by hundreds of different authors over years. Nobody's characterization is ever concrete because one author will write them like an asshole while the other tries to make them endearing. They are always trying to shake things up to shock people which, majority of the time, only pisses the fans off more often than not.

I have been mildly irritated by Spiderman at best, until Tom Holland. GOD DAMN, HOW I LOVE SPIDERMAN ('s butt and dance moves especially) NOW! SPIDEY FOR PRESIDENT!
