Can someone explain this secret to me?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not worth understanding

So, like, this whole argument is insanely dumb and stupid and exhausting on all sides, but. All the headline says is that the controversy was amplified. It doesn't say "everyone who disliked the movie was a bot". I'm sure some people interpreted it that way, and that does seem to be our level of understanding of bots generally, but it's not what it actually says.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It does kinda seem to imply that there are only a few haters (who are all whiny manbabies who can't possibly have any reasonable arguments for disliking the movie) whose opinions only got heard because bots amplified them.

Yeah, the methodology doesn't lead to the narrative being pushed by the results. There seems to be a narrative now that everyone loved the movie and all the haters were merely bots. Which is unfortunate and not my personal experience.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Didn't like it. Not a bot. Not a man baby. Only intermittently whiny.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have literally never heard of a narrative where everyone loved it and the haters were bots.

Man, them Russians want to influence EVERYTHING!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...they do. That is not even an exaggeration.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
to the extent that you believe that bot manipulation exists, politically-inflected culture-war touchpoints seem to be one of the major sites where that happens, so that's probably where it would come from

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But, they were not saying all the hate was Russian bots. They said that Russian bots used the divisiveness of the movie to sow discord among a large group of people.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's not how fandom has reacted to the news.

Yes, and it's true. Sowing discord is sort of the russian bot Reason to Exist. That and sucking up to Putin :)

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You really lost me @ "SJW kool-aid" followed by your next statements, I mean, what? Even if your stance was clear to me.. IDK, people will find SJ reasons to back up their negative or positive opinions of anything, especially this, it's not unique to one opinion.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, as a general observation, the left tends to be much more skeptical of Russian bot stories, and it's the more centrist progressive-liberal types who tend to strongly endorse them.

What OP means by "SJW", I don't know, since the term is largely meaningless.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-10 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
And people who drank the "SJW kool-aid" are equally as likely to hate the movie as neckbeard manbabies are, albeit for somewhat different reasons.

Just look at any post from any official SW social media and see how many comments reference SJWs and are basically just bashing Disney/Lucasfilm for including women and POC in prominent roles.

Not all of the criticism comes from trolls (either Russian bots or human ones) but a large amount of it does.

The legit criticism gets lost underneath all of that nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of us who dislike the movie for several reasons other than "teh evil SJW agenda!!1" probably hate those whiny morons the most because they're the reason any criticism, no matter how legit, gets dismissed outright based on their idiotic behaviour.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got to be honest, OP, but you seem wildly angry over this whole thing. The Russian bot thing is... interesting. First I've heard of it. Why does it make you so angry, particularly if you don't even 'hate' the film?
Your over the top anger over this film is precisely why a lot of casual fans are over the whole Star Wars toxic fandom as a whole. People need to calm down. Instead of getting angry about Russian bots, whether true or false, why not get angry at the few toxic fanboy and girls ruining this film experience for everyone else? Making it so that its impossible to give any criticism of the film without being accused of being racist or sexist?
Though your use of the term 'SJW' and casual throw out of your friend a a 'Jew' points me to your true intentions with this post.

We get it, you didn't like the movie, move on already. There's so much good stuff coming out this year.

The key word that you seem to be missing in the headline is "amplified."

Saw that article posted in Reddit, and even on Reddit, where people barely read the actual article and react to headlines more often that not, more than half the post was about how the actual article barely had any real data and just took some Twitter posts and counted how many replies were from Russian bots. Which, we already know Twitter is full of Russian bots, this is not news. Even the article doesn't try to pretend it's some sort of real study, minus the headline which might not even be by the author, who knows.

tl;dr Clickbait title is clickbait.
