Pearls

Why do people say "clutching their pearls" to mean someone is shocked by something or disapproves of something? It's a big cliche, but it doesn't make much sense to me.

It used to be a thing for genteel women to wear pearl necklaces and when they were shocked, to clutch them in their shock. These days the image and the meaning remains, though people don't tend to do that any more.

When you're shocked, you put your hand over your sternum or lower throat and that is where your pearl necklace is (you wear one of those, right?) It might be some protect-your-throat impulse, but it's probably just one of those cultural things that seems universal but isn't.
