I have a couple of funkos of characters I like, but people who think they’re gonna get rich or even make a decent amount of money off a funk collection are nuts. At least with tulips you can grow more tulips. (Has there ever been another widespread plant cultivar collecting/investing frenzy, or is it cheap mass-produced dreck all the way down?)

The recent succulent craze hasn't gotten even remotely to that point, but I did read an article about how it has caused some problems.

I had no idea there was/is a succulent craze, and I’m a gardener. I’ve heard of people stealing valuable cacti from people’s yards because xeriscaping’s getting more popular, though.

animal not plant, gov't sponsored tax deductible alpacas. They had alpacas going for 20 grand. It was a bit nutsy.

AYRT—okay I would love an alpaca collection but that’s hilarious until I think what must’ve happened to them when the bottom fell out of the market.

It wasn't as bad as you think, actually! Some were abandoned and had to be rescued, but in general more experienced alpaca farmers snapped up the animals for bargain basement prices. They're also part of the huge expansion of free-range chicken eggs - the alpacas guard the chickens out in the fields. Definitely not as bad as the ending of some other animal husbandry crazes (e.g. emus in the US, camels in Australia).
