Yeah that was a bad analogy, I meant more in the way that he's the "bad guy" who ends up in Hell when without him Christianity wouldn't have happened. Sometimes you need someone to do something "wrong" to make way for the foundation of something "right."

OTOH, if the wrong you're doing includes mass murder of entirely innocent people, the foundation likely to be built on the chaos you create isn't likely to be a particularly positive one.

Nevermind that if your aim is to be truly chaotic, mass murder of innocent people isn't going to cut it. I mean, that's really only one side of chaos. Frankly, Hexidecimal was much better at being chaotic than the Joker. Looking at V, he was also pretty good at chaotic disruption.

... Looking at those three, is there something about masked/white-faced characters that just screams "Crazy and unpredictable," or like... What?

I don't know Hexidecimal, but it sounds like I should! (I could also go at length about charismatic guys in masks...)

V's is the best sort of chaotic disruption IMO, because it's chaos for the purpose of knocking down the structure of the bad guys in charge, to create space for the rest of us to build the new. Much better than chaos for the sake of chaos through mass murder and bombing!

Oh great, now my brain's lumped movie!V and Heath!Joker together, and I think I'm gonna hafta shut down for a bit...

Hexidecimal was from an old cartoon called Reboot. I don't actually remember much about what she did, but I remember she scared the friggen pants off me as a kid.

His "agent of chaos" speech was captivating in the movie, but didn't even make it to the fridge before I was like "Dude, randomly blowing things up =/= chaos."
And now I realise that the Joker is the only character ever that I don't demand to know the motives of. Maybe it's like his scar-stories. Maybe he reinvents one every time.

I don't know the Batman canon much, but I liked his claimed motives in A Killing Joke - showing people how close to madness they really are, the possible insanity of remaining "sane" in an insane world. Now I have to go and read it again, because I can't remember exactly what he says, but I remember nodding my head and thinking "well, his methods are brutal and repulsive, but he does have a point"... although a page or two later, thinking "and so does Batman".

Yes, the Killing Joke! (honestly, most of my Batman canon comes from TAS and that one comic)

The thing is, even then, I don't think those are his motives. Not really. That was just his motive at the time, for that crime in particular. "All it takes is one bad day."

That's actually one thing that I really, really didn't like about TDK. The Killing Joke had him torturing Gordon by showing his daughter naked and bleeding and all that other mind screw stuff (complete with jaunty tune that I would love to hear Mark Hamill sing one day). In TDK, he kills Harvey's girlfriend and burns his face.
The object in both was the same--to take an upright man and turn him into a monster.

But the point of The Killing Joke was he failed. Having him succeed in TDK just...makes the movie feel like it missed something. I don't know.

Also, TKJ actually has a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming between Bats and the Joker, which alone should prove that Alan Moore, for all his crazy craziness, is a genius.

Yes on all the Killing Joke stuff! I absolutely loved the end.

Hexadecimal's female, actually. ^_^

Hexidecimal was a girl, a virus from the show Reboot! which took place inside of a computer. She alternated between random acts of evil and seizing MSpaint to wreak havoc upon the city by turning all the buildings into crudely drawn flowers or something.

I FEEL THE SECRETS COMING ON ALREADY!!!
