Basement flooded earlier in the week, so I've had a grand ol' weekend mucking it all out. On the downside, holy fucking shit my mom's a low-key hoarder. I found not one, not two, but THREE boxes of towels. TOWELS. Who needs this many towels?! And she's like, "oh but they're practically new, you'll want to switch out your towels eventually - how many years have you had them?" Like, sure, I'll switch out my towels, but THAT'LL STILL LEAVE 2 2/3 BOXES OF TOWELS.

On the upside, I have a car full of electronics to take to the recycling place. I've found two printers, two shredders, several cassette players, misc wires, old wired phones, a scanner, and a plethora of geriatric speakers. ...and three large boxes of VHS. Which is maybe only half of our total amount of VHS, but the recycling place charges by the pound for those and I don't want to go broke.

I'd swap out my towels but not for boxed ones that have been boxed since god knows when ew.

It's plastic bins, so not too terrible there. No smell, still soft. Some of them are hotel towels, which is like... really Mom? I know half our flatware is ill gotten, but towels too??

My sympathies. My dad's basement is exactly like this and clearing out his horde is our winter project. :(

Protip: When you're done, these are great for absorbing humidity in the air and helping a room smell less musty. You just take the lid off and put it on a shelf or table:

Oh, I am all over this.

Good luck with your winter project! I know mine's going to involve sneaking out things to good will while Mom's looking the other way. "But those have never been opened, we can use those as gifts!" "WE HAVEN'T GIVEN ANY OF THIS STUFF AWAY IN YEARS."

I think I can cut it down by half without her noticing.

When you're done, can you come over to my place? I am terrible at donating stuff because I feel guilty, like the person who gave it to me 10 years ago will know somehow that I got rid of it.

I'm totally going to have to do that. My dad isn't a gift hoarder, he's just a "omg can't throw anything away because what if I find a use for it one day" hoarder. It's maddening. Like... do you have a use for it right now, that you're going to do within the next two months? No? THEN OUT TO THE GARBAGE IT GOES.

Only one box. I found the other two after the water damage people had come in, cut away half the carpet, and plopped down a dozen fans.

The towels weren't doing a heck of a lot of good anyways since the entire foundation got kinda overwhelmed by all the rain we'd gotten.
