I agree. I generally only consider canon what's actually in the narrative itself. Anyway, actors often have no idea what they are talking about. Just because they are involved with the production for work doesn't mean they are a fan or put much thought into it.

This seems like a really good example of the limitations of 'canon' as a way to understand fiction, construct fanworks, etc.

On the one hand, absolutely, nothing that actors or creators say externally can ever be canon, or textual. The text is the text. Nor should statements like that necessarily be taken at face value. But those statements can still shed light on what they were doing when they made the thing, and help guide our interpretation, or better understand the thing. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Usually my response to stuff like "deleted scenes" is "thank god that was cut". And retroactively saying that a character was performed as a demisexual biromantic tomboy who secretly loves her mother does't magically change the text.

+1, and even worse is when fans pursue and abuse the crew or actors about canon events. I want drama *in* my canon, not *about* my canon!

Ugh, I hate this trend so much.

I actually prefer to learn a couple of things about the crew/actors for that reason. Not a life story, but just enough to remind me that they are actual human beings with lives separate from the fandom. So none of this "aggressively addressing actor by char name" or "attacking lady villain for being such a horrible bitch" garbage. I don't know why some folks just can't get a grip on reality.

Same.

Hearing an actor's thoughts can be interesting sometimes but mostly I really don't care and focus on the characters and canon instead, and I certainly don't get the near-worship people have towards actors(or any celeb really) because they're just a well-paid dumbass at the end of the day.

And the level I see people go to defend their faves when they do shitty things is just... that level of fanatical devotion is disturbing to me tbh.

I used to follow some actor stuff, but then seeing a couple of actors outside the show (one on a talk show and one on Twitter) kinda wrecked their characters for me, so now I mostly stay away. So I feel you, OP.

It's not a fixation. It's just people caring about something and you not. It's not a better or worse way of being a fan. I think it's interesting to look at things as creative works

I pay almost no attention to actors and creators unless they do something really newsworthy. (Or it's JK Rowling messing with Harry Potter again - I can't seem to escape that.)

I can't even name the actors in most of my favorite shows. (I especially can't name anime VAs)

I say that like I'm proud of it, but I'm not. It just is what it is.

Same though. Don't get me wrong, I like and respect the actors, but I'd rather hear about the canon instead as well.

I try my best to avoid learning anything about actors/actresses. I just don't want to find out they are complete jerks. I'd rather focus on the characters in the show....

I'm with you on this for everything except Tolkien. All the stuff outside of the main canon that he and his son wrote just makes the fandom cooler. I don't know know that's my one exception, but it is.
