There's just never going to be much horror fic. Sorry about it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-16 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, writers and readers are more interested with the same sex scene that his been done 50 times before. If you want horror, you have to go to real authors.

While I love horror, I also find it really difficult to write. Maybe that's a problem for other fic writers as well. I tend to write cheesy Halloween stories for October instead.

Horror is very difficult for me to write. I feel like all my ideas have either A., already been done, or B., are too stupid in general. I'm kinda like Homer Simpson telling a ghost story: Me: ...and she hit him in the head with a golf club! Everyone:...okay? Me: Because he always played golf and it really bugged her when she was alive. Everyone: ...you never mentioned golf before. Me: Oh. Umm... Everyone: ...you neglected to mention that she was dead, too. So she's a ghost? Me: Well, shit. Let me get back to you on that.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH you'll never get better unless you just forge ahead.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but horror just isn't my forte. I'll leave it to writers who are actually talented at it.

LOL :)

Good storytelling is rarely just about originality, though. Dumb ideas aren't necessarily an obstacle, either. It's all in the execution.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes but when it comes to horror, my execution stinks.

I have a feeling that most horror isn't "new" in terms of plot; in fact, in most horror stories I've read you know from the first line who's going to get it, and how, but that's beside the point. The art is in the execution.

Because fandom only cares about who's fucking who, and the season of Halloween and horror has instead turned into a fuckfest. :/

Same as every other month of the fucking year.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Boohoo, people won't write what you want them to.

I am going to create some kind of horror challenge like with Kinktober. BUTTTT I guess it will have to be in a different month.

How do people spread word of these things?

Create it, then post info on the Dreamwidth calendar communities like fandom_on_dw and fandom_calendar.

Also post a notice in the /r/Fanfiction reddit.

(There is a Trick or Treat exchange, but I don't know how many people do treats instead of tricks.)

If horror cannot be done then at the very least I demand more monster sex!

I like to read/watch scary things. Writing them is a different animal. I have to be in the right mindset. In order to write horror, I have to be scared/creeped out by the concept I'm writing and it has to live in my head while I'm writing, so it lingers. A lot of the time I don't want to deal with that and I applaud writers who can and do.

I've written horror for Silent Hill but not much else. Obviously it comes with the territory in Silent Hill, but somehow I almost never think of writing horrific things in non-horror fandoms.

(I wrote a few original horror stories too but they were very short.)

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think the issue with horror is that what people are frightened by is so subjective that it's hard to anticipate what your audience will like AND find scary. Horror in the written medium also tends to be more psychological, because you can't really do jump scares or visual frights. You have to build it up, which is hard to do and requires a certain level of writing ability. I can understand why most people don't feel up to tackling it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
That is the same for literally every genre ever???
