I don't think it should be overdone, or it would cripple the overall quality of the show, but I generally find it funny when they start laughing. It's fun to know that the actors are having fun and think it's hilarious, and it can be really entertaining to see them try to hold character even when they are crying with laughter.

I agree, I find those to be some of the most entertaining moments. There's nothing quite like an actor trying desperately to keep it together when they're obviously about to just start cracking up.

It makes the humor feel more genuine! When people are honestly having fun and cracking up, the positive energy is so contagious. A million times better than thinking they are bored to tears during the skits.

Agreed :). I especially love it when the laughter gets contagious and soon the cast and the audience are all laughing together. It's just neat to share in a fun moment like that.

Totally agree. I love watching actors trying not to loose it during comedy sketches XD

I have no problem with them laughing. It makes it enjoyable.

For sure-- especially with Stefon bits, where they throw things in that he hasn't seen before to try and get Bill Hader to break.

THIS! I watch for when they break character!

Will Farrell on the tiny phone and Brendan Fraser losing his Xena wig are still my favs. I'm cracking up just thinking about them!

I have to look this up!! Thanks, anon!

It's good, in moderation. I do feel like some people almost do it on purpose to take some of the shine and attention of a good bit for themselves. Fuck Jimmy Fallon.

People hate it when they break character? It always cracks me up when they're trying so hard not to laugh.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
It depends. I've never regularly watched SNL so I'll use another example to make my point. Colbert breaking character on the Colbert Report was hilarious because it was so rare. Jon Stewart giggling at the jokes on the Daily Show happened several times an episode so it was annoying as hell, imo. So it's the same with me for SNL - they have to prove to me they can make it through a whole skit without breaking before I appreciate it when they can't.

It's supposed to be "live" television with no retakes. Getting surprised by guests is part of the charm.
