thank you! I thought I was the only person who thought Seinfeld was super overrated.

It is super overrated. Still better than BBT for me. BBT is terrible, Seinfeld is just bad.

BBT is pretty damn bad too. I can't remember where I heard this but I heard or read it described as "geek blackface" and I think that sums it up pretty effectively.

That's what I meant. Seinfeld is bad, but BBT is worse.

+1. Seinfeld was occasionally funny but mostly mean and dull. BBT is just plain terrible.

Yup.

Or as I like to say, making geek stuff "safe" for the masses.

Cool. We totally need more gatekeeping in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It feels pretty disproportionate to me to invoke blackface when talking about BBT and geeks. And it's also totally unnecessary to actually make the point you're trying to make - that BBT consistently views the nerdiness of its characters as ridiculous and that it's usually the butt of the joke.

DA

Yeah. I prefer to put it as "BBT tries to be a humorous show with geeks, but really the geeks ARE the joke, over and over again"

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty moderate in my social-justice-iness, and even I'm pretty uncomfortable with invoking blackface for something like this.

Not the OP but you're definitely not alone. I grew up with it and never thought it was that funny. I feel the same way about Friends.

I didn't care for that show either. Two of them are supposed to be the dumb ones and they're ALL dumb!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, so true.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It quite possibly might be overrated, but I think it's also very good. It suffers from the thing where the most wildly popular and remembered parts of the show often aren't the best.

Idk, it's not everyone's cup of tea.
