126. Satanism is not the worship of Satan, it's the worship of self + pagan-style magick with no ethics. And I doubt devil worshippers, which is what you're thinking of, are going to identify with Milton's Satan.
132. The only way you can get turned on EVER, or just by him? Word to 'loved him before, want to fucking punch him now' though.
149. I've never thought about it this way before (I'm bi, for the record) and I sort of love you.
152. An artist doesn't want to think? What's their 'art'? Bad Twilight fanfic? How the hell can you be an artist and not think?
168. Shipping isn't always about jerking off, sometimes it's about writing a good story. For the times that it is for the porn factor, why do people watch porn videos rather than use their hand? Because it's pretty to look at. Seriously, common sense.
187. Troll secret is troll. Also I couldn't even finish the third book because I've never seen such painful strawmanning and not seeing the forest for the freaking acorns. Some Christians are closeminded and ignorant and teach damaging ideas. Solution? KILL GOD, WHILE MURDERING CHILDREN TO DO IT. Also, the Inquisition is happening now instead of thousands of years ago and involves the destruction of souls. Nice job, Mr. Pullman. C for effort and gay angels.
189. You think those scars would make ANYONE attractive enough to get this kind of following? Oh, and all his other movies totally got this kind of reaction too. It's not about his portrayal of the character, hopefully a totally different person from who he was, at all. Fail logic is fail.

And I doubt devil worshippers, which is what you're thinking of, are going to identify with Milton's Satan.

Actually, most pretty much do. Well, except from the neo-nazi batshit ones. (We have plenty of drama here in the Satan fandom).

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It is only fair. Here in the Jesus fandom we've been having wank since 33 AD.

[identity profile] weyrdchic.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
My logic, it fails me, then. I thought most active devil worshippers were either going with the Christian version or...I don't know what I thought, it probably involved fourteen year olds in black who don't know what they're talking about, so my apologies. XD

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no problem at all. We indeed have many of the 'rebellious' emogoth kids that you described of course, heh :(

You could check for info a couple of devil-worship sites that won't kill too many of your braincells.

Oh the butthurt, oh the overreactions!

Re: 187

[identity profile] weyrdchic.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, first of all, I'm not a Christian or any other formal religion so I can't be all THAT butthurt. Second, when someone writes a book with an obvious real-life agenda against a real-life group, and it makes no sense if you think about it for more than a minute, and I've heard it praised as fact multiple times including the secret I just responded to, I don't think it's much of a reaction to, like...say it sucks. It's not like this is something ridiculous like a shipping war.

Re: 187

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

It's a fantasy novel meant to criticize fundamentalist religion, not a polemic ala Richard Dawkins. Would you even blink at a fantasy novel written by a Hindu that had many gods in its pantheon? Or by a Christian who had a Jesus figure defeating a bunch of Pagans talking animals leads by a witch?

Re: 187

[identity profile] weyrdchic.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I don't care what fictional allegories are set up as long as they, y'know, make sense. You can talk about your own religion all you want, that's perfectly fine, and you can bitch about other people or ideas IF it makes sense. I love Discworld because they take the time to do it properly and thoughtfully, and Dragonlance has a lot of thinly-veiled stuff about the Catholic Church in the time of the Inquisition, but that's not a fuck you to anyone who practices it right NOW. And they take the time to point out that just because people in a religion act like idiots doesn't mean that the higher power, if there is one, actually approves.

I'm guessing you're talking about Narnia, which Pullman wanted to bitch about in the first place, and I've never read it, seriously. I've seen the first movie, the anti-Paganism got lost on me (and I'm saying that as a former Pagan) amidst the 'let's retell the crucifixion and btw candy = drugs!' but I know it gets more obvious later and I doubt I'd have much stomach for it then. I know about the infamous thing with Susan, and that definitely pisses me off. If someone left a secret about that saying 'I think it was the right thing to do', I'd bitch about that too.

Fiction doesn't exist in a vacuum. If there's an allegory, it's meant to get a message across, so if I find the message freaking stupid, especially when it blames an entire group of people for what only some of them do, and what people of other faiths do too...

Pls not to be confusing the OP of the secret and Phillip Pullman.

If that's not his view then I'm sorry for being mistaken, but that's the impression I had long before the OP, at the very least running off the books and a few things I'd read him say: Christians are either evil fundies or generally deluded and contributing to an evil system. That seems to be the way most vocal atheists I've encountered treat religion: "It's not just that we have no way of knowing but I choose not to buy into it, it's that the very act of believing in things that might not be true will make us all bigoted murderers, therefore let's 'kill God.'" So considering that's what the His Dark Materials books *literally* do, I hope you can see my mistake, if it is one.

Lol, I'll sign to this. When I'm not trying to tell a story, of course. ;)

187. Actually, as a Christian, I really suggest finishing the third book. Maybe I'm just romanticising or being overly optimistic, but I found the way he handled the "kill God" thing in the end symbollic of the true definition of God. The old symbol was a man, the new, actually truer definition was... well, you'd find out. You're right, definitely more close-minded than Dogma (watch it; there are lulz), and criticizing instead of promoting like C.S. Lewis' Narnia. But then, as you said, apparently he had an agenda.

Of course, back then I used to think he was also promoting something, but when, apparently, he blatantly said he was criticizing, condemming, and complaining about the Church -- he could have said that about any organized religion or even aetheism; I'd still be extremely disappointed in him. I'm for lots of series that have ideas against religion when they make sense (Full Metal Alchemist and all that), but it's like...wha..?

Some Christians are closeminded and ignorant and teach damaging ideas. Solution? KILL GOD, WHILE MURDERING CHILDREN TO DO IT
IKR? :(
Pullman: *bitch face* "Well when you say it like THAT..."

[identity profile] weyrdchic.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Dogma is wonderful. :D And that actually does encourage me to pick up the book again, if it's commenting on the nature of what God should be/IMO is. My thought on hearing what happens was something like 'what? Republic of Heaven? how does that even make SENSE? you're going to reenact Eden? WHAT?'

Re: 168, 187

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an observant Jew, and reading those books actually helped to reaffirm my faith in God. Then again, Jews and Christians don't always agree on the whole God thing, so I can understand why Christians get a different feeling from the books.

Jews and Christians don't always agree on the whole God thing,

Granted. But I mean, seriously, since when has it become appropriate for a cage fight for the patent on what God means anyway? I just don't get it.

The phrase "Republic of Heaven" is ALWAYS going to crack me up.

That was seriously my thought... I mean, he's always ragging on vapid girls for being shallow and two-dimensional and then he went and spat out that sock of crap and I just did a double-take. Guh.
