116. ME TOO. I remember totally pimping (read: fuglifying) my shop page back in the 5th grade. Copy + pasta HTML, hell yeah :D

126. Paradise Lost is epic win, but I think you have the wrong idea of Satanism . . . at least, according to the peoples I have met on the internets and, erm, Dan Brown. (and yes, I do know that Dan Brown = epic epic fail, but I like Angels and Demons in the 7th grade, mostly because I wasn't supposed to read it ;P)

149. God, I don't know how to put this without sounding like I'm homophobic, but, uh, studies estimate that homosexuals of all types make up about 2-7% of the population (and that comes from Wikipedia citing about 6 other studies, none done by skeevy nasty groups like focus on the family.) Really, the vast majority of fictional characters in mainstream fandoms display hetero tendencies, so I think it's appropriate (if a tad silly) to say you're wearing "slash goggles" when avidly pairing mostly previously-shown-as-hetero men together (or womens, though I think it's undeniably obvious that people slash guys more often). It doesn't negate your experiences, but it's how it is.

164. Um, miss the part where it was a giant McCarthyism metaphor (or, to be generous, about hysteria) and not a theology lesson?

177. lol, that's like 95% of fanfiction, period. House/Wilson is just a really popular ship, which tends to equal more bad fanfic. (on the bright side, that usually means more good fic too! just more crap to wade through)

187. OMG YOU'RE SUCH A FREE THINKER SAYING THE EXACT SAME THINGS EVERY OTHER MILITANT ATHEIST SAYS WHY DON'T YOU HAVE A COOKIE YOU SPEESHUL SNOWFLAKE YOU.

For the record: radicalism/fundamentalism is bad when applied to almost any ideology, christianity the political organization =/= christianity the system of religious philosophy because humans being humans we fuck up everything, and even if you have something against pretty much every christian ever (oh my goodness 2 billion people at the moment we must all be hypocrites, fanatics, or brainwashed. Yup, Copernicus, Descartes, Newton, Mendel, Planck, etc. - we're all obviously backwards thinkers!) you have to admit that Jesus himself, regardless as to what you think of his divinity, was a pretty swell guy.

196. WORD. There's a huge difference between people being ill-suited to each other and someone not deserving someone else.

The sound of a screeching christian spouting three logical fallacies in two sentences.

tl;dr

1. I go to church a grand total of once or twice a year, which hardly qualifies me as super-religious. I could give less of a fuck what you believe personally. I do give a fuck when you are a self-righteous arrogant asshole who assumes that other people that do not suscribe to your beliefs are stupid and/or evil. Notice that my capslock read 'militant atheist,' not 'atheist.'

2. Any person who has passed high school European history can tell you that

a) Hitler persecuted gypsies and many 'flamboyant' male homosexuals along with Jews. His persecution of the Jews was not based so much on religion (Hitler wasn't that great of a christian) but on perceived racial differences. He thought of the Jews as a race, and one that threatened the purity of the Aryan nation. Now his propaganda? Mentioned the religion stuff a bit more, yes, but still definitely focused on the race thing. I'm more than willing to agree that racism sucks hairy monkey balls.
b) Crusades: The very first one was a response by the Byzantine emperor to the Turks that were invading his land. He went to the church because they were pretty much the most powerful institution anywhere near him at the time and he was getting his pansy ass whooped.
c) Spanish Inquisition: You see, there was this place on the Iberian peninsula called Granada and, inconviently for Ferdinand and Isabella, it was mostly occupied by 'moors'. I'll give you a bit more leeway on this one because Isabella was a religious fanatic extrordinare.
d) Witch hunts: blame misogynism, at least partially, and please please please do not try to say that it resulted singularly from Christianity because they were far from the first group to oppress women.

Sure, religion had at least something to do with all of those events . . . but there's just as much in each of them that you can blame on something else.

3. Anyone who has passed basic common sense knows that you can't expect people not to fuck anyone up. Correlation =/= causation. Case in point: French Revolution. Most of the people there were atheists/deists and all of them were idealists . . . and they had this thing called the Cult of Reason, which worshipped . . . reason. Most of them thought christianity was a load of bs as well. Guess what. They beheaded people. Josef Stalin. Horrid man, and an atheist. Both groups tried to impose their ideologies on other people, but both were definitely motivated by other things. Does this mean there is anything inherently morally wrong with atheism? No.
Again, new testament. Is there anything in there that can be considered by most rational people amoral? Not really. But plenty of people have either twisted the message or ignored it altogether.

4. I consider myself a Catholic and I don't really agree with the whole transubstantiation stuff. I won't pretend to be a Newton expert but not suscribing to one or two tenets of dogma doesn't make you a deist. If he believed that Jesus was a divine figure, that makes him Christian. If he just believed in an unspecified higher power, than he was a deist.

But Hitler DID capitalize on underlying religious anti-semitism in order to mobilize the masses.

It doesn't matter because you people don't believe any religion to be valid, so don't try to single out one religion as being OMG BAD just because it's been prevalent throughout history, actually, primarily European history (as if Europe = the fucking world).

And Jews don't need your fucking sympathy.

Jews beg for our fucking sympathy.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Where are the logical fallacies? Or do you just like to use the word "fallacy" to show off how OMG SMART you are?

It doesn't matter what points you make anyway, because you're anonymous and obviously don't have the strength of conviction to stand behind anything you say, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Quick, I must make my self a witty nickname with an animu icon next to it in order to make my arguments valid STAT.

Unless you identify yourself, you aren't worth arguing with, because I don't know who I'm arguing with. It's just a chicken shit defense because if you say something stupid you can just fade away into anonymity instead of taking credit for your weak argument.

Here's your "animu icon" BTW
SEE, IT'S ANIMATED

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Newton was more of a Deist than a Christian, because he couldn't reconcile the Trinity, or half the other nonsensical Christian dogma, with his understanding of the universe.

because humans being humans we fuck up everything
THIS. It's evitable.
What about: because grownups being grownups fuck up everything?

Jesus himself, regardless as to what you think of his divinity, was a pretty swell guy.
Even OTHER religions acknowledge him. Heck, Dali Lama Tenzin Gyatso, Ghandi, Bhudda, Mohammad, all those guys aren't seen as too shabby either. It's just... you know. "Duh." This dude dies, lots of angst, Constantine picks it up for lulz and it EXPLODES EVERYWHERE when it logically should have been this insignificant other Jewish sect thingy.

Newton was Deist because when the apple fell on his head he was all "ASLDFKJ WTF TRINITY THREE IN ONE IT'S LIKE THE CHICKEN AND THE EGGGGG D:", and, you know, it was the new thing in the Age of Enlightenment and HE JUST WANTED TO FIT IN OK?
