I think I agree. I'm definitely in favor of less illegality more regulation when it comes to a lot of drugs. Our drug laws are messed up. It is ridiculous that someone can spend more time in jail for doing drugs than for raping someone.

The laws are bad and make no sense. And it's not just a law thing, it's an enforcement thing also - policing, trials, sentencing, access to quality lawyers, etc. All of those things are brutally unequal in this country.

Absolutely. Honestly, a lot of public defenders aren't particularly good. And for civil law issues, even when they can deprive you of liberty, you can't even get a public defender. An immigrant can be detained and then deported for smoking one joint. We have one case with a guy who had two tablets of ecstasy. That should not cause you to be imprisoned, detained, and deported. It is ridiculous.

And also, public defenders are ridiculously underpaid & overworked.

Read about the public defenders in Louisiana sometime, it's a shock and a scandal (like everything about the penal system in this country).

Oh, it is. Underpaid and understaffed to ridiculous levels. And in many states the judges, rather than being neutral, see prosecutors as their colleagues and defense attorneys as their enemy. It is pretty terrible.
