What things do you wish were legal/illegal

Inspired by Canada legalizing cannabis and the fact that I really wish my state would legalize medical marijuana.

What things do you wish were legal or illegal in our country/state/city/whatever?

I wish it were illegal to smoke ANYTHING in public places (streets, bars, anywhere).

As someone who's asthmatic and allergic to so much, having to hold my breath so I can walk past someone on a public street is absurd.

I kind of agree with this. I think maybe there should be a few dedicated public smoking places. But I think the law should be "smoke nowhere except here" instead of "smoke everywhere except here." I have asthma too, and I feel your pain.

Can't imagine how much harm it does to people with legitimate respiratory problems but as someone with something as stupid as a smell sensitivity and dissolve into a reflex coughing fit when I smell smoke even though it doesn't directly threaten my health, I'm all for it.

me too. but then I die when people in my shop have too much perfume ect on so I guess nothing is fullproof

I agree, honestly. If you wanna do that shit, fine, but don't inflict it on everyone else around you.

I am also asthmatic, and with severe allergies- but you can't just demand people to stop doing something just because it inconveniences you every so often... It's different, maybe, in a workplace. When dealing with scents, and co-workers wearing heavy perfume/smokes heavily, because that is a controlled environment. You can ask them to stop using their cologne, or wear a light jacket to take off after smoke breaks. When you get to street level, it's basically an all for grabs. People smoke outside because they can't inside. It's not too hard to spot them, cross the street if it comes to it, but I'd recommend just buying a scarf/mask. They're not expensive, and if you're that sensitive then you should probably be wearing one anyway... People just aren't going to stop doing what they do.

I often joke that when I'm an Evil Overlord and I rule the world, motorcycles will be banned because urgh THE NOISE they make.

That's not something that's inherent to motorcycles though, it's a Harley marketing thing that gets a lot of imitators.

I think the noise is usually on purpose, though, and they don't need to be that noisy.

I would make it illegal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet and protective clothing.

My motorcycle is quieter than most cars, and it's only "most" because electric cars are a viable thing these days. I'd be all for banning the fucking awful amplifying pipes, though.

As someone who had to somehow keep a newborn settled in a house right next to the regular stomping ground for obnoxious roaring scooters/motorbikes, HARD AGREE. God, the murder I wished on those fuckers at 2 in the morning after spending hours trying to get the baby to sleep, only for one to roar past and wake her up again...

I think I agree. I'm definitely in favor of less illegality more regulation when it comes to a lot of drugs. Our drug laws are messed up. It is ridiculous that someone can spend more time in jail for doing drugs than for raping someone.

Hate weed but still think it should be legal in my country.

I think alcohol commercials should have the same restrictions tobacco commercials have. Some years ago, all tobacco advertisements in TV and cinemas were prohobited and the boxes all have "shock pictures" of rotting limbs and organs etc. but the advertising for alcohol is still going strong with not even any obvious warning labels included. I feel it's kind of unfair and also pretty ridiculous.

They already legalized cannabis here in California and I'm glad.

I wish discrimination against LGBT+ people were illegal, and it often is, but unfortunately here in the U.S. there seems to be a resurgence of hate.

I wish region coding and restricting downloading e-books and music to certain countries were illegal. I know why they do it, and I know they're not going to stop, but it still annoys me. I will grant that this is relatively trivial.

(Note: I'm not saying "no copyright laws." Just that I people should be able to legally pay for and download stuff from other countries.)

Legalize (and regulate) prostitution. With strongly enforced labor rights and protection against abuse.

I don't want it to be legal because we live in a very less than ideal world and it would immediately lead to horrific abuse, but sometimes when I'm discouraged with humans, I catch myself sort of wishing we could have some sort of mandated sterilization.

I wish those super bright headlights were illegal. They really hurt my eyes at night and, depending on the height of the car, they end up hitting my mirrors and making it hard for me to use them.

Illegal: Discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

Legal: A way to obtain a DRM-free copy of digital data should be mandatory.

Since most of what I want legal/illegal has already been discussed I’ll go with.

Shorter copyright protections before a work falls into the public domain. I’m all for creators profiting off their work but it’s ridiculous how we increasingly don’t have access to our own cultural figures because some one else “owns” them. Lifetime of the creator + maybe 25 years or something so their family can benefit then it’s public domain.

Broader protections for voting rights, such as automatically registering people to vote once they turn 18, minimum number of polling stations regarding populations and area, having elections on the weekend and declaring them a federal holiday, extending the amount of time polling stations are open, removing as many restrictions as possible from voting...

I wish planned obsolescence was illegal and voting once US citizens hit 18 was mandatory.
