Re: What things do you wish were legal/illegal

Hate weed but still think it should be legal in my country.

I think alcohol commercials should have the same restrictions tobacco commercials have. Some years ago, all tobacco advertisements in TV and cinemas were prohobited and the boxes all have "shock pictures" of rotting limbs and organs etc. but the advertising for alcohol is still going strong with not even any obvious warning labels included. I feel it's kind of unfair and also pretty ridiculous.

Yes, I'm not sure how I feel about recreational use of marijuana, but then again, I'm not sure how I feel about heavy alcohol use. But it absolutely has medical uses. As someone with chronic pain that nothing seems to help, I'd really love to try marijuana to see if it would help.

And I agree with you that alcohol ads should have warnings too. Maybe not exactly the same because moderate drinking doesn't hurt as long as you don't drive drunk whereas one cigarette can hurt your lungs. But more warnings would be good.

Medicinal marijuana often has different properties than recreational marijuana, as in it doesn't get the user high/not as much as recreational varieties do. So that's another plus.

I recently read there have been new studies that actually suggest that every sip of alcohol can already be harmful so... eh.

Puritan claptrap that ignores how alcohol helps prevent dementia, among other things. Moderate alcohol users always live longer in studies than teetotalers. Most studies show heavy users live longer than teetotalers so the smug non-drinkers are still going to die before most drinkers and their later years ruined by dementia anyway. But sure, One Sip of Wine Will Give You Cancer!!!

You sound overly touchy on the subject of alcohol consumption. Makes you wonder.

I am highly skeptical of those studies and strongly suspect that there's some kind of confounding factor thingy going on

I wish they would just stop with the shock pictures. Obviously that doesn't work, and as a non smoker I wish I wasn't subjected to that gross up anytime a smoker takes out their things. I swear, having the packet lying around the table forever and your eyes innevitably drawn to it is worse than the actual smoking.

I agree. I think the warnings should have to be specific and informative. But shock pictures aren't actually much of a deterrent and don't serve much purpose.

Ayrt

Yeah, I very much hate looking at those pictures. Cigarettes tend to be kept behind/next to supermarket registers where I live so I always get a nice long look at that stuff when I wait in line and I hate it. I don't smoke and never had any intention to start and that won't change so why I have to look at rotting bodies all the time, I don't know. Smokers don't care - they often don't care when it's their own damn limbs and organs that are rotting. There are even collecter's albums for collecting all the damn pictures!
