Re: What things do you wish were legal/illegal

I wish it were illegal to smoke ANYTHING in public places (streets, bars, anywhere).

As someone who's asthmatic and allergic to so much, having to hold my breath so I can walk past someone on a public street is absurd.

I kind of agree with this. I think maybe there should be a few dedicated public smoking places. But I think the law should be "smoke nowhere except here" instead of "smoke everywhere except here." I have asthma too, and I feel your pain.

NAYRT

The problem is that it seems like it would be a lot of work to go through and plan those spaces out in anything like sufficient quantity, to the point where you're not punishing people for smoking.

IDK, the standard around here is "at the curb and/or 10 feet from a building" and I feel like that seems to work out OK. Especially with how much less common smoking has become over the last 20 or 30 years.

At the curb could mean by the sidewalk though, and if I'm walking on the sidewalk through your cloud of smoke...

Like, my work (hospital) has a no smoking on the grounds policy, so people stand at the edge of the lawn/on the curb etc, which means I still have to get past them to get into work. :(

It's less about punishing people for smoking (you do you and all that), than thinking of my own health that no one else has the right to endanger.

But, like, what actually is the solution? Especially if you're in an urban environment?

Smoke at home? Don't smoke on public streets?

I don't think that banning all public smoking is a reasonable accommodation to make to avoid walking past smokers on the sidewalk occasionally, sorry.

Is multiple times a day occasionally to you? Although I guess YMMV depending on where you live. My BFF is from California and when she came to visit me she was actively shocked by the amount of people just... standing on streets smoking.

Yeah, I do think it's a cultural thing to some extent based on how much people smoke, and I do think, if you can do cultural things to limit the number of people who smoke, that's good.

But I just don't think that smoking should be banned, whether by law or in practice by not giving people anywhere to smoke.

Why not? Why should anyone else have to put up with YOUR smoke?

And winds being contrary, people smoking right outside the place always send the smoke inside the doors and foul up the whole hallway anyway.

It's a shame that there is only one entrance into your hospital, but if the smokers standing on the edge of the property are blowing their smoke onto hospital grounds, then you can ask security to tell them to move along. Seriously, they do it a lot. Almost as much as they have to tell truck drivers to stop idling next to the air intake for the building.

I think it would be tough. But for many asthmatics and those with other lung problems smoke really is a problem. I don't know if I'd make it illegal, but I think we need more regulations and more restrictions. It is kind of like peanuts in schools. You don't need to smoke, I need to breathe.

Saying "smoke in your own home where you aren't impacting other people's quality of life for the sake of your habit" isn't punishing people for smoking. There's a lot of shit that's not appropriate to do in public.

This. You can manspread all you want on your own couch, for instance, but it's rude as shit to do it on the bus or train or a movie theater seat. It's about having basic courtesy for the other people around you.

Yeah I don't mind dedicated smoking rooms in restaurants and malls and stuff as long as is vented and stuff. Outside is just harder to control because of wind and shit so it seems easier to just say 'please don't'. :/

Can't imagine how much harm it does to people with legitimate respiratory problems but as someone with something as stupid as a smell sensitivity and dissolve into a reflex coughing fit when I smell smoke even though it doesn't directly threaten my health, I'm all for it.

I will be coughing/wheezing for a couple hours after breathing in smoke. And my asthma is under control for the most part. It is a lot worse for people who have severe asthma, and especially children. When I was a kid, smoke could trigger an asthma attack and send me to the ER.

I agree, honestly. If you wanna do that shit, fine, but don't inflict it on everyone else around you.

I am also asthmatic, and with severe allergies- but you can't just demand people to stop doing something just because it inconveniences you every so often... It's different, maybe, in a workplace. When dealing with scents, and co-workers wearing heavy perfume/smokes heavily, because that is a controlled environment. You can ask them to stop using their cologne, or wear a light jacket to take off after smoke breaks. When you get to street level, it's basically an all for grabs. People smoke outside because they can't inside. It's not too hard to spot them, cross the street if it comes to it, but I'd recommend just buying a scarf/mask. They're not expensive, and if you're that sensitive then you should probably be wearing one anyway... People just aren't going to stop doing what they do.
