Re: What things do you wish were legal/illegal

I don't want it to be legal because we live in a very less than ideal world and it would immediately lead to horrific abuse, but sometimes when I'm discouraged with humans, I catch myself sort of wishing we could have some sort of mandated sterilization.

Yup, that would instantly be abused. Poor people, addicts, minorities, and disadvantaged in general would be the ones sterilized. Maybe the idea has merit in theory, but the thought of what would actually happen (as did happen historically when people were sterilized without consent) terrifies me.

It has already been abused! It was once legal in a bunch of US states to forcibly sterilize people who could be declared "feeble minded" and maybe for other reasons, too. There was a whole thing on PBS recently about the eugenics movement and the idea of sterilizing people in order to breed poverty, crime, alcoholism, prostitution, and all manner of mental health issues out of the population, and it was just terrible. I can grump about how some people shouldn't have kids because they clearly aren't doing a good job raising them, but I don't actually want anyone to have the power to just sterilize people without their consent.

I wish voluntary sterilization was easier to get and free. It's ironic how society has really swung the other way on the issue. I've met people who don't want kids because of things like mental health issues or poverty and they can't find someone to do it because they "might change their mind."

Yes to voluntary sterilization. I've never wanted kids. Removing my female organs would solve my medical issues. But most doctors refuse to even discuss it. And now that I have a doctor who is willing, my insurance won't cover it.
