Work Thread

How's your job going?

Re: Work Thread

(Anonymous) 2018-10-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
...what job?

Seriously, though, it's almost laughable how difficult it is for people my age (20-21) to get work in my country. Either no-one will hire you because you're too old, or no-one will hire you because you're too young/haven't got enough experience.

What country?

Same in America unless you're some kind of smiling, ever positive fool.

Maybe I should be offended since that's part of why I got hired despite my lack of work history (the manager needed people who would help with the helpful, friendly image the store strives for), but eh, it's true.

If you're working in a store, sure, and even then, you should be allowed to not be chipper all the time.

But I'm just trying to work on computers and you apparently have to be a smiling loon for that.

Under control. Just living for the holidays.

I started working at a pet store at the end of August and for the most part I've been loving it. But a couple weeks ago someone left and I was just kind of thrown into my new role as the main person taking care of the animals in the morning, and the training has been very half-assed and frustrating. I'm almost never told everything I should know upfront. One minor example: My shift manager says "It's Wednesday so that means the chinchilla gets a dust bath" and then on Friday the other shift manager asks if the chinchilla had his dust bath because that's also done on Monday and Friday but that was never mentioned when the subject came up before.

But I get to pet dogs every day so it's hard to get too annoyed.

:*) But "have to give chinchilla more dust baths" sounds like such a great work problem to have.

It sounds pretty great when you put it like that. I just wish people would tell me everything I need to do instead of bringing it up for the first time when asking why it hasn't been done.

So busy, as we have an international conference next month. I'm anticipating a lot of late nights coming up..

Pretty good, actually. I got excellent performance reviews and a bonus last week!

Good. It is still challenging. My boss wants to cross train me on some stuff but it is hard organizing it with the person I am doing it with. No one has complained about me afaik and I love most of coworkers. It is also nice to be so close to home.

My parents have lost theirs because of hurricane Michael, but they didn't like them anyway. The best I could do was weekend work with family friends being woefully underpaid, and that job is gone too but I'm not crying about it.

We're going to fix our house and move.

Right now, it's causing me anxiety/stress because of a couple things that happened today. There's nothing I can do about them right now, though (and one of them I can't do anything about, period, it's completely out of my control) so I'm going to try to just relax and not freak out for the rest of the night and hope tomorrow is better.

Overall things have been really good lately, though.

Okay. I enjoy what I do. Love it in fact. But I'm only making $500 a week, and frankly that's not a reasonable pay even for just contract legal work.

Same. I'm getting a chance to work in the field I love but I'm not making enough to support myself.

Dunno yet! Just had my first day at a new job and so far it's way too early to know if I'll actually like the place/the people. Everyone seems nice, but most people do the first day!

Okay, except that I just put in for a day off that my weekend supervisor who dislikes me also asked to have off—after I spoke to all my coworkers, including her, to make sure that no one else was going to be off that day. Ugh. I had a volunteer date confirmed for that weekend for something I’ve been doing for decades and I really don’t want to miss it.

I like it but it would be nice to have a weekly rota more than a few days in advance
