Is it just me, or are they not readable at all?

I just read the first 5 "Ai no Kusabi" light novels. I expected them to be all erotic, but there was so, so, soooo much prose and I found it hard to follow. Not sure if that's typical of light novels, but man, we'd go a whole book with only like three significant scenes happening.

I wouldn't say they're unreadable, but they're awkward. Once I get past the stiltedness of them, I tend to enjoy them ngl..

I've translated some segments of light novels, and it's because the typical Japanese writing style in light novels is structurally VERY different from English. You can't just translate it, you have to in effect rewrite the entire thing to make it flow naturally in English. A literal translation of a light novel will sound awkward and stilted, which is probably what you're encountering.

Because the point of a light novel is that it's quick, easy to read and not very well thought out. They're written by people who could never be good enough to write actual novels. And the translated ones are the "good" ones. The ones nobody wants to translate are worse.
