Actually, it's easier to come up with your own shit because you can do whatever the fuck you want, dude.

That's just so not true. Worldbuilding, making developed original characters, and crafting a logical plot are a ton of work. "Do whatever the fuck you want" is a very bad philosophy for original writing and probably leads to very poor fiction.

nayrt - This. Someone who says that original writing is easier because you can do whatever you want either doesn't write original fiction, or they're really terrible and lazy about it so they assume everyone else is taking the same lazy shortcuts.

But the thing is

I do that all the time

Literally all worldbuilding is is going, "I want it to be like this in my world, because I say so."

Like, Twilight's popularity proves your point is wrong. People are going to enjoy a book not because it's the most well-researched, most accurate thing in the world, but because it gives them what they want out of a book. Most don't care about how complex your worldbuilding is, even! It's great if they do, but like. Most people read to be self-indulgent. You've seen how many times people have poked holes through Harry Potter's worldbuilding and plot, and yet it's still insanely popular and fun.

Uh, no, that's not true.

Twilight.

Harry Potter.

How "heavily researched and worldbuildy" do you seriously think these two popular series are?

Fanfic writers do whatever they want anyway, it's just they don't have to think too hard to come up with new stuff if they don't want to, they just need to vaguely memorize a pre-made canon.

Eh, disagree. Most fanfic writers have to actually pay even vague attention instead of going, "Oh, I had a dream last night about pretzels that could sing, I'm gonna write it."

Since I haven't really read a whole lot of novels about singing pretzels, I'd guess pro-writers/writers of "original" (read non fanfic) stuff don't do that, either.

And to be fair, there are plenty of AUs so far removed from the canon, both for plot and characterisation, that sometimes, I'd honestly prefer singing pretzels.
