Re: Why do people always ask if you are okay?

Close family member in this case. My dad. We talked on the phone literally an hour before we got home, I talked about how I was not doing okay today. He gets home, comes to my room and asks me if I'm okay. He knows the answer, so I don't get it.

We'd literally just talked, though. I don't get asking a question you already know the answer to. I doubt he wanted me to tell him it all again. So asking again just seems weird to me. Like he just wanted me to say yes so he could stop being concerned.

But I'm tired and in pain and I know I'm reading into it. I'm just sick of the question. The answer right now is always no.

nayrt

You're right, sometimes people ask repeatedly when they've already heard your answer. There's lots of different reasons for it. It's not necessarily that they're trying to force a positive response from you, but they might be anxious and this is how that anxiety and worry manifests. Or they sense that there's more to the story you're not telling them and this is their way of trying to give you a chance to tell the rest.

What would happen if you said,(patiently and with genuine desire to know the answer) "Dad, we just had a really long conversation about this. Is there a reason you're asking me again?"

That's probably just his way of checking in on you/asking for an update, not an indication that he forgot everything you talked about. It's just how people talk a lot. They know you have a cold but ask "How are you feeling?" Hey, maybe there's been a change in how you're doing so why not check? It can also be intended as an opening to ask for help if there's anything you need that they can do. I'm not sure what else people are supposed to say. "So... still feeling like shit huh?"
