It kind of is, though. All those posers who think fandom is mainstream because everyone and their grandma has been to Comic-Con and Game of Thrones is water cooler talk don't know what real fandom is. I was LARPing before it was cool, blah, blah, blah.

Uh... okay, I think this more about whatever baggage you're bringing into it. I don't see the secret as gatekeeping. It's arguing that fandom isn't mainstream because some parts of it are definitely not mainstream. There's nothing about which part is "real". That's your word choice.

nayrt - This. I think ayrt is reacting to something that's often said and done... but isn't being said or done in the secret. It's an inflammatory topic, which is probably why they're jumping on it so hard but their argument isn't really with OP, no matter how much they're trying to make it so.

Yes it does. OR OP has no argument that fandom is not mainstream. Unless they are trying to gatekeep what counts as fandom.

OP's argument, as I understand it, is that some parts of fandom are mainstream, but many more parts of fandom are not mainstream.

I don't think OP is making a judgment on any of those parts being more or less real. Just stating that some parts of it are mainstream and some parts of it aren't.

idk I'm not ayrt but OP's secret is kind of "pfft, you think liking a GoT episode is FANDOM? Yeah, sure!" which does seem divisive to me. I don't think it's necessarily a knock against casuals, but I'm still reading it as "real nerds write fanfic" sort of thing.

Well, no. The secret doesn't say that, either. It specifically says that if geeking out over GoT is all that fandom is, then sure, fandom is mainstream. It doesn't say anything about liking GoT not being fandom.

Oh, I understand that some people are interpreting it differently. But if you (and that other person(s) are trying to say that your interpretation is in the actual secret, well... it's not. I think you and the other(s) are misunderstanding OP's point.
