Cosplay and conventions have become, not mainstream, but definitely more accepted in the sense that, there's a lot less mockery and disdain heaped on people who say they cosplay or go to conventions. I think that's where the front line is, in terms of whether or not fandom is "accepted" - things that we used to be savagely mocked and condescended over are now just sort of accepted as okay for people to do.

There's still a massive problem with non-fandom people thinking that only hot sexy 20-something girls or men who like armor cosplay, and a lot of the bullying that happens on social media are non-cosplayers who legit think only hot girls or armor guys should ever be seen in public but that's a different can of worms.

Yeah, my coworkers all know that I attend anime conventions and cosplay and they think it's cool. They're always asking me questions about my costumes and how I make them and wanting to see pictures because they think it's neat that I make all of that stuff myself.
