It is and it isn't - there are certainly a lot more things that are acceptable about fandom than there were 20 years ago when I first joined. Getting excited, merch, and to an extend fanfic are massively more mainstream than they used to be, particularly for certain fandoms. The fact that I can BUY merch in the supermarket for some of my fandom means that has gone mainstream. When I was talking to a friend and mentioned that I like to write, her first question was if it was fanfic (in general it is not).

However some things are still looked down on, and I think cosplay and smutty fic are part of that :/
