I think it's a matter of degree, not yes/no, and fandom is way more mainstream than it used to be. I think fandom is definitely larger than it once was, and the more people in fandom, the harder it is for the mainstream not to notice. I think the commercial potential is better recognized and that pushes it more into the mainstream (I've seen Doctor Who posters at Target - do you have any idea how shocked I would have been by that 25 years ago??) The greater emphasis on visual media in modern fandom, as opposed to literature, gives fandom a chance to be more visual in turn with things like cosplay and merch. Finally, the internet provides a wider gateway to fandom, since you don't have to personally know anyone or know the fan club's mailing address to start interacting with fandom.

I remember watching Trekkies and they interviewed someone about slash fanfic and this person was filmed in shadow with their voice altered. Today, I doubt all slash fans would freely admit on-camera that they read slash fanfic, but the fact that people ship same-sex pairings is pretty widely known and not seen as quite so shocking that no one will talk about it without hiding their identity.
