Yeah there's a difference between 'nerdy stuff is mainstream now' and 'FANDOM is mainstream now'.

Like, I think a lot of non-fandom people can understand dressing up for comic cons if they don't know how much money and work goes into serious cosplays. Dressing up is fun sometimes, and I know non-fandom people who think it looks cool even though they don't necessarily get every part of it. They think of it as like... well it's like a big costume party with geek stuff, and some of that geek stuff is cool, and it's not so different from X hobby thing I'd do. And they can see the social aspect to going to a place and hanging out with other people who do the same activity...

whereas fanfic etc is like... it doesn't have the same kind of visibility and it doesn't look like a social activity even though it can be very social if you're involved in exchanges or you have beta reader relationships or just commenting and making friends through fandom and writing, but people don't look at that and say 'oh yeah, okay, it's not my thing but I get it'.
