Re Strange/Tony: They spent a day together, and in that day one of them sacrificed his sacred duty and by extension his life for the other. For reasons of destiny rather than personal attachment, yes, but still. As far as white guy ships go, in this exact fandom even, that's actually reasonably substantial. You can argue a fair bit of emotional impact, especially given Tony's knee-jerk loyalty tendencies towards people who sacrifice for him. Bit shakier on Strange's end, because he seriously doesn't know Tony from Adam yet, but we can speculate that what he saw of Tony, both fighting together and in that 1-in-14-million future, might influence things. Add in a fair amount of backstory similarities between the two, and they don't come off half bad, all things considered.

Still not my personal ship of choice, mind you, my Tony ship will always be Tony/Rhodey or on some days Tony/Loki (and I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of Tony/Nebula right now), and I haven't even seen Dr Strange, but I can still see where people are coming from. It is FAR from the flimsiest pairing this fandom has come up with.
