Or people are just being hyperbolic by bringing up the "dark, seedy" side of fandom to point out that there's a whole hell of a lot of fandom-related things that are (rightfully, and I say this as a smut writer/reader) not going to be considered mainstream by anyone. And considering how widespread fanfic is in fandom, it's bullshit to act like fic is some fringe part of "fandom as a whole" and it won't influence whether it can be considered mainstream.
