101. It is pretty damn cool.

103. Eeeew, Unis look gross there. My first self-insert was Pokemon. I had a mew and I beat up Geovanni as Cinnabar island burned to the ground. It was awesome.

104. A waste of time is a waste of time. Maybe it's more rewarding to other people than you. I do think there needs to be a word for ship that doesn't automatically imply fluff and sex, though. Maybe just variations of the word. May I ask about your epic issues with heterosexual love (and if they are limited to fandom or if they extend to reality)?

110. How does that work? What happens if one day you just kind of get carried away with someone you met and the clothes are coming off? Do you stop and go "wait, wait - have you read the stranger" and kick them out? If you forgot to ask and had sex with them, would you feel really bad about it later?

114. Or maybe you're talking to your subconscious mind as it posesses your nervous system. OooOOOooo!

119. My friend once bought a Naruto headband to attract anime watchers. She hates Naruto, but figured it would be the most easily recognizeable symbol. I'd say your idea is better (plus, a lot of cosplay jewelry is pretty!).

139. You probably don't. Maybe the colour. I dunno, but that isn't exactly a natural human eyeshape.

147. When they say "female Cloud," they mean her face and hair. It's just a character design thing. That said, they probably WILL make her brooding and withdrawn because they haven't really been able to conceptualize female fighters as people who can, you know, crack a smile every so often.

156. Me too. People are crazy.

161. That's okay. No one's going to come and beat down your door and take away your Honorary Feminist Membership Badge just because you disagree with a particular group of feminists. I hear a lot of complaints about that site in particular. To me, it looks alright, but I don't read comics, so how would I know, anyway?

191. I doubt they'd kill him after putting all that work into development and prosthetics.

If you're a woman, you automatically know more about sexism in comics than a man. Even a man who's actually read comics. Trufax.

Unless you don't see the sexism, in which case your privilege is showing.

...Well that's not sexist.

No, see, only *women* have the proper context to really appreciate sexism. A man can go his entire life and never be made inconvenienced or uncomfortable about his gender. And they can't reliably imagine themselves in an unprivileged position, because they lack the necessary empathy.

If I were a man I'd feel pretty darn 'inconvenienced' by people telling me I can't possibly have the empathy to sympathize with unpriviliged people though.

I agree with this comment. You just summed up quite a bit of what I was going to say.

I don't think they're saying a man lacks the necessary empathy to be sympathetic, just that you can't imagine yourself into the same experience. Like with any discussion about privileged groups. The dominant group can imagine what it's like and sympathize and even recognize instances of sexism/racism/homophobia etc. But experiencing life as a minority is different.

At least that's what I assume the person is saying.

Re: 161

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't agree with that. Men are perfectly capable of recognizing sexism when they see it, and of being offended by it. A while a man can indeed go his entire life and never be made inconvenienced or uncomfortable about his gender, so can a woman. And both genders can also go through life encountering many inconveniences related to gender along the way. Granted, historically women have faced more persecution than men, and they are still more likely to have gender-related problems today, but that doesn't mean that therefore they are the almighty oppressed and the only ones that can possible know what it's like to be discriminated against because of your gender.

I personally don't feel at all underprivileged because I'm female. I never have. I don't know if that's because I don't act particularly feminine or what, but that's the way it is. Yeah, there are assholes. I ignore them. No matter who you are, there will always be some aspect of you that is looked down upon by certain groups (sexists, racists, homophobes, etc.). It isn't gender-specific.

I disagree. I mean, of course I'm not disagreeing that your experience is what you say it is, but the inequality between the sexes isn't just a case of women historically facing more persecution than men but really they're equal and men sometimes get uncomfortable too. Sexism isn't always something you can just ignore. You may never feel like this is something you have to deal with, but many women are aware of dealing with it.

Regardless, as a woman you obviously have more credibility talking about the experience of being a woman than somebody who has never had that experience.

That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Re: 161

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is, and I don't want to deal with someone like that on the offchance that it isn't. Win/win.

Re: 161

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
...Well. If it is, I'll certainly be embarrassed. At least I got the chance to articulate an opinion, at any rate.
