I've never post my fiction, but I have to say I absolutely agree.
My best fics are in a small-time fandom I've only been able to catch so many episodes of. I've written only around a dozen drabbles about it, but between it and another series I've only gotten so far into, they remain streets ahead of anything I've actually divulged in...
Even knowing no one will see it, I'll still end up overthinking the general ideals the rest of the fandom seem to seek. It won't even have to do with the initial glow of the show waring off as time goes by. Depending on the writing, it isn't always the characters either...
Just that the more headcanons, and opinions I hear, the more I seem to write for them rather than for myself. it kinda sucks...
