It seems so obvious when you say it, but... yeah, that's when I most enjoyed writing fic, too. I started writing fanfiction on a whim, not really knowing much about the fandom's preferences or anything about fandom culture at all, to be honest. I had no idea what "canon" meant or the idea that people would have "ships" and "shipping preferences" or that there'd be a lot of people who react negatively to original characters. I just decided to do it for fun.

Oof, same, OP. I get too much in my own head and psych myself out when I'm deeper in a fandom.

Another secret I could have written in my sleep.

Same though. As a fandom gets older to me, the drive to write fic gradually wanes.

This is partly why I almost never read fics for fandoms I write for. Ofc I won't be able to avoid seeing headcanons and fanon tropes being thrown around in fandom spaces, but at least I can avoid seeing what other people are doing.

I've never post my fiction, but I have to say I absolutely agree.
My best fics are in a small-time fandom I've only been able to catch so many episodes of. I've written only around a dozen drabbles about it, but between it and another series I've only gotten so far into, they remain streets ahead of anything I've actually divulged in...
Even knowing no one will see it, I'll still end up overthinking the general ideals the rest of the fandom seem to seek. It won't even have to do with the initial glow of the show waring off as time goes by. Depending on the writing, it isn't always the characters either...
Just that the more headcanons, and opinions I hear, the more I seem to write for them rather than for myself. it kinda sucks...
