R-rated? For what? Does violence get movies R-ratings?

The series had a lot of violence, and I think it was more mature than many pieces of media with similar "kids with superpowers" plots because the author seemed to be trying to be realistic about how a group of kids would be affected by having to fight some new unknown menace alone. I'm not sure it would be R-rated, though, since there wasn't any sex, plus the main characters weren't old enough to go to an R-rated movie (though they could easily sneak in as flies or something, if they wanted).

Violence can get a movie an R-rating if it's particularly graphic or realistic, especially if it's not just one isolated scene in the movie.

An extremely faithful Animorphs adaptation that failed to tastefully cut away from some of the more infamously disturbing scenes could probably earn an R rating based on the violence. Hell, the morphing scenes alone could end up very Cronenberg.

Have you reread the books as an adult? Because there can just be a straight adaptation and the thing might be rated mature. There's lots of gore and creepy body horror.
