The problem is when people stop criticizing the work and start judging the person. "This plot was convoluted" or "there was a missed opportunity there" are critiques. "she is racist and ableist and homophobic" is pure bullshit, and I always see the second instead of the first.

Seriously, this. I love her books and I love going through them and toying with plot holes and things that could have been and yeah, sure, her writing isn't perfect, but I'm not going to insult her. I'm going to enjoy myself by playing in the world she created and contemplating ways it could have been better instead.

I'll cop to there being some very legit critiques of the seriously offensive racial stuff she pulled with magic in america. And I don't mind at all if someone else has to draw the line there and say they can't enjoy her work any more because of that. And there are spaces where those critiques should be erred.

But with full acknowledgement that ignorance is no excuse, especially as a public figure and a goddamn writer who should be able to do some research...I do think she's ignorant, rather than malicious. And so much of the criticism seems to go even beyond "She's racist and evil and all her work is now trash!!!" to "and anyone who doesn't agree is also racist" because that's just how online discourse goes these days, apparently.
